8 bulan yang lalu saya bersama rekan2 melakukan ekspedisi ke seluruh muara sungai pantai barat dan selatan Aceh yang diyakini pernah fungsikan sebagai pelabuhan pengekspor komoditas lada hitam Aceh ke Amerika dan Eropa. Wilayah pantai barat dan selatan Aceh dikenal dengan pepper coast (pantai lada).

Charles M. Endicott (1793-1863) was born in Danver, Massachusets but for much of his life was resident in Salem. He spent the better part of 20 years engaged in the Sumatran pepper trade, first as a supercargo and later as a master, and made use of his voyages to survey the difficult northwest coast of the island. His first contributions to a published chart were corrections to the 1827 second edition of Samuel Lambert’s New Chart of the West Coast of Sumatra from Analabo to Bankolle, covering roughly the same stretch of coast as the chart offered here, followed in 1828 by two sets of sailing directions for the region. In 1833 he issued this chart of The West Coast of Sumatra, along with Sailing Directions for the Pepper Ports on the West Coast of Sumatra, from Pulo Riah to Sinkel. credit
Ekspedisi yang kami lakukan dimulai dari Rigaih [Rigas] (teluk Calang) sampai ke kuala Singkil, kami memasuki semua tempat-tempat yang diyakini sebagai Pepper Ports. Yang dipandu oleh selembar peta kuno milik Muhammad Ghust seorang kepercayaan Sultan Manshur Syah. Dalam peta tersebut ditulis dengan jelas nama-nama bandar atau pelabuhan saat itu.
