THE DEFEATED CHAMPION

He was a champion in academics but defeated in life. Life and academics are two different things

David is the only child of his parent. He was loved and cherished by them because he was a product of late conception.

He was a highly intelligent kid. He was also quiet and reserved. All these qualities made him to be loved by all and sundry in his environment.

David’s father was a bank manager. He was recently transferred to a new branch. So, David had to be transferred to a new school. His first year in his new school was challenging. But his intelligence made it to be less challenging than it should be, he was at the top of his class. He was a champion in the school because of his academic prowess. He was the dream child of every parent.

But beyond these qualities, David had a thorn in his life- low self-esteem. He was always exhibiting it in his words and behaviours. This made some of his friends to take advantage of him. He was always at the receiving end of bullying in his school. This might be because of his broom-like physique.

Elijah, the oldest in the school was usually David tormentor. Elijah was feared by all students and even his senior in his school. Elijah had a younger brother Joseph, who was also leveraging on his brother behaviour and power.

On a certain day, Joseph challenged David to a fight. He was so boastful and was supported by boastful words from his brother. David was so furious but avoided him. He was angry due to the fact that Joseph was his junior and a small boy as termed by David’s mind right there. In that anger he told Joseph that he was only lucky because of his brother presence. But Joseph was not giving up. Thanks to the sound of the bell signifying the end of the lunch time which saved the fight.

David left school immediately after closing to prevent any more trouble. On getting home, he forgot about the preplanned fight because of the loving atmosphere. It was his parent’s wedding anniversary.

The next day, after the closing time, David felt a tap on his shoulder it was Joseph. He said “My brother is not here, let’s see what you are capable of”. David responded with a blow to Joseph’s cheeks. Jumping on him and raining series of blows to him. David took his bag and foods pack and ran home with the echoes of David the champion filling the air.

The news of Joseph being ill reached the school the next day. Everyone was surprised with David behaviour. On reaching the class, the teacher called him a DEFEATED CHAMPION for allowing his behavior to be influenced by another negatively. He was also disciplined. Due to his quiet and reserved nature, his parents were not aware of that incidence. Joseph recovered and David learn't his lesson.
