It was a cold Sunday evening. She had come to see her friend, Joy. I had spent over two months trying to convince her to date me, to no avail. That day she had come to do the unthinkable.

We had met two weeks earlier. She called on me and introduced herself as Joy’s best friend and that she had been seeing me around. She was new in the neighborhood so she asked to be shown around. While we walked we talked and got to know each other better. We talked about where she was born and grew up in. she told me about how they had moved from Enugu to Maiduguri and now Lagos; how it has all affected her education. She was 16years old but just in jss3 (junior secondary class 3).

Initially I was evasive of the relationship topic but was shocked to hear her ask me “do you have a girlfriend?” I therefore decided to delve into the topic and found out she was single. She’d never been in a relationship. She believes theres someone made for everyone and at the right time that one will come (if that was not my self talking in her head).

We discussed further and I eventually opened up to her about Joy and all she had been doing to me. She became enraged and said she would do something about it.

I never imagined this was what she had in mind when she promised to do something about it. She walked up to Joy and said:

"you know I’m your friend, since we were five. I wouldn’t lead you astray or allow you make wrong choices. Why have you been treating the poor boy this way? He really likes you and he’s a good guy. Give him a chance, and if you’re not interested let him know. It’s not fair, what youre doing.”

And just when I thought she was done she added:

“Just so you know, I’m interested in him also. He’s the kind of guy I want as my first and only boyfriend.”

The day ended with Joy telling me she was not interested in me and wants the best for her friend, so she’s letting me go. I realised she had been keeping me for her selfish purposes. Next day I ran into Frances and got her number. We talked for hours on the phone and sent numerous texts to each other. I was already falling for her. And she liked me as well. For me, that was bliss, pure bliss.

We dated for three years. Three years of pure love, passion, commitment, and intimacy. Three years of turmoil, fights, break-ups and make-ups, and crazy fun. Do you know the feeling? When you find your soulmate and believe nothing can come between you both? When you are so in love that nothing else seems to make much meaning? That’s how I felt for three years.

We broke up soon after I was admitted into the university. Distance, lack of time and effort killed our beautiful sweet love.
But the end of our story has not come. Not yet. I’m a hopeless romantic. We don’t give up without our last trial.
