And that my friend is why you don't eat lunch at the flea market

in #story6 years ago

This past Saturday morning my girlfriends brother called me to see if I wanted to take a ride with him to pick out a new gun he had bought. Here in Illinois we have a 3 day waiting period for handguns and a 1 day waiting period for long guns, meaning if you buy a gun on Monday, you can't go pick it up until Thursday.

He had bought this gun at a place called Gat Guns out in West Dundee which is quite a hike from Chicago, it's way out west. We drove out there, on the way about a block before we got to the gun store I noticed a flea market on the left hand side of the road with a bunch of taco stands.

Now I love taco stands and street food, whether here in the states or traveling, although it doesn't always agree with my stomach, I love it so much it's worth the suffering lol.

We went to Gat Guns, browsed around a bit, he picked up the gun he had already purchased and on our way out he said you hungy? You wanna grab a bite to eat?

I'm sure he was thinking Potbellys or Five Guys or something like that, but I casually mentioned, hey I saw that flea market down the block, you wanna go taco hopping?

After a quizicle look he said what the hell sure.

We pull up to the flea market. Now I like flea markets and go to a lot of flea markets in the area from Charlie Montana's to the All State to the Swap O Rama out in the south suburbs and I'll normally grab a bit to eat there. This flea market was oddly enough more food stands than it was stalls selling stuff.

It was a hot and humid day, it had just rained earlier in the morning so it was wet out with puddles bringing out the flies and mosquitos. We sat down at the first taco stand and ordered a couple Al Pastor tacos, they had the spit with the pineapple on top so I took that as a good sign. The first tacos were pretty good. We proceeded to hit about 3 more stands for tacos and finished the day off with a chorizo and potato Sambazo before getting in the car and heading home.

I noticed a couple hours later my stomach started to feel a little sour but didn't think too much of it. As the day went on my stomach ache got worse. Mine was pretty mild, I didn't wind up puking or anything, however later in the day my girlfriend, myself, her brother and his fiance and a couple friends grabbed dinner and then went to a pool hall to finish off the night.

The next morning I awoke to a snapchat of the most vomit I've ever seen in a parking spot. Apparently when they got back to their hotel those tacos especially weren't agreeing with him and up came his dinner.

Brutal! Shot a full blown puke geyser..... Out here in Tucson we call the Taco stands roach coaches. I have only ever ate at a couple of them. To me there isn't as big of a reason to eat at them because there are some pretty nice mexican places that are well priced.

haha roach coaches I like that. Yeah food stands can be real hit or miss. I kinda got spoiled one of the first taco stands I started eating at probably had the best al pastor tacos I've ever had and they were only $1 a piece. My girlfriend and I used to go up there and I'd get like 10 of them, they were the smaller street tacos.

The idea of food stands and taco trucks is kind of romantic to me, sitting outside on a hot summer night under those yellow HPS lights listening to Mexican music eating tacos but the reality can be stomach cramps, diahrea and puking lol.

I should have known better this place we went to didn't really scream of sanitary conditions, there was queso fresco sitting out in the hot sun, flies all over, you live and you learn I guess lol.

Hahha, Yeah sounds like a biohazard. But even inside a lot of these restaurants sometimes it probably isn't much better if we saw back in the kitchen.

It might be like the movie Waiting ... lol

haha, i totally forgot about that movie, even though that's a classic i rarely see that played on comedy central or whatever although now that i think about it i dont have cable so who knows maybe they do.

That was a total classic along with the American Pie moves and Road Trip! LOL

YEah some of the Taco stands just aren't sanitary. Plus, they reuse the food they didn't sell for the next day and even the day after that.

Thanks my man for sharing this story. If ever I make it up there again I will not frequent this place lol

Yuck.

It is very pleasant for your trip, you can also relax. Beautiful photos. Thank you.
