The War of the Skies - Intro

in #story6 years ago (edited)

The oldest and most devastating war in existence has found a way to continue, to spread throughout creation. Heaven and Hell are no more are the only scenarios for this terrible conflict.
It began when the planet shuddered. All the inhabitants lost their homes. the ability to move, resigned to contemplating helplessly how the the world was falling apart. The phenomenon was called the Wave and produced changes beyond human comprehension. Now we have to survive the consequences. The angels and the demons are among us, are real, and have imposed their war on us. A war in which we are insignificant, a war we didn't believe in. and that will change our lives forever.

Nine out of ten people would feel some remorse at interrupting the sermon of a priest with a noisy song from a rock band, the lyrics of which were, like. minimal, inappropriate for the occasion. And that would be even more true if the event that would end up obstructing such an insensitive way out of a funeral.
However, Ramsey only felt a wave of happiness when the priest lifted up the sight of his Bible and all the attendees turned their heads to go through him with a look of indignation. He reached into the pocket of his blazer and took out the as fast as he could, while mumbling an apology and walking away to in a hurry through the cemetery gardens.
When you can only talk to your wife once a month, because she's almost there. in isolation on the other side of the world, hanging up her call is the last thing you need to do. goes through your head. Even so, Ramsey took mental note of changing the tone of his modern mobile phone.

-Hello, honey -he waved as he continued to walk among the trees leaning on his back. on his black cane. He had to stop for a second to get down to his eyebrows on the the wind was threatening to take him away.
I've missed you so much. How's it going down there?
Ramsey shuddered at the thought that his wife was in Antarctica. Every time he thought about it seriously, a chill ran down his back from top to bottom.
I love you too, darling," replied his wife's voice. Everything's going according to plan around here. The visit of Congressman Collins and his bureaucrats has delayed us a bit, but we managed to get them to give their financial support before Congress. How's everything at home? he asked without disguising his longing.

Ramsey preferred to omit the recent event in the church: he didn't think it was up to the same level as the Congressman Collins or the million-dollar budgets for scientific missions. In Instead, he summed up the best moments he'd had since they spoke. last month, which unfortunately weren't as many as he would have liked. The but he didn't want to cast a shadow over his business. monthly conversation with unpleasant news. His wife, for her part, told him about the progress in the research of the project they were leading at the South Pole. Jane used to use the kind of scientific jargon that Ramsey, a tobacco director, needs to be cut down on. It would be because they had only recently been married, he thought cynically. At least he had been married in a ceremony in which, fortunately, the guests were more tactful than he was and turned off their cell phones. ultaba almost incomprehensible. But she spoke so passionately to him that she had never felt the same way.

So, how long before the work is done and you go home? —
Ramsey asked.
If everything goes on like this, in two months we'll be done," she said with a
a note of joy.
Ramsey didn't think it was as good news as his wife did. Although the deadline is not
he had hoped that he would be back sooner, but he had not been able to get away with it.
he refrained from saying anything.

-Oh, honey! His wife's voice sounded excited on the other side of the line.
I can't believe I'm seeing the aurora australis! It's an extraordinary light show. I wish you could be here now to watch it with me.
Ramsey imagined his wife with her phone taped to her ear, looking up at the South Pole sky. Without realizing it, he let himself be carried away by the illusion of being beside her and looked up as if she were pointing at him where to look. What he gazed at left him speechless.

Ramsey, are you still there? asked his wife. I can't hear you. Can you hear me?
Yes, I hear you, I'm sorry... I swear... I see her too.
What do you see? he replied without understanding.
The dawn. I see the lights in the sky forming a kind of colored trail
Ramsey muttered.
Come on, honey," she said reprovingly. Don't start with your jokes.
-I swear to you. I'm seeing an aurora up there," he insisted. It's like the one we saw in Alaska last year. The one you see there is green with purple strokes?
Yes," she replied with a clear change in her voice. But that can't be.
You'd have to be much further north to see the northern lights. And I couldn't to be the same as the one I see. Listen to me, if this is just another practical joke, I swear I'll tell you what. I'm staying here for a year....

-It's not a joke! he said,'He cut. I'm seeing it with my own eyes. I'm going to take a picture with my cell phone and send it to you, so you can make sure I'm not lying. Dragged away by an unexpected excitement, Ramsey walked away from the grove of trees to improve your vision. As he stepped out to one side of the cemetery, he noticed that the people would stop and lift their heads up. At that moment, a spectacular and silent flash filled the sky in its entirety. Ramsey blindfolded his eyes so that he could see them. instinctively, and when he withdrew his hand, he watched the firmament clothe itself with different colors. First it was completely dyed red and in a few seconds it varied. the tonality, passing successively through a scale that went from yellow to indigo.

Ramsey? his wife shouted on the phone. Something happened here. The dawn has disappeared with a kind of explosion of light. His wife's voice sounded scared. The sky is changing colour....I couldn't believe what I was saying. It was simply impossible. I was telling him in great detail what he was witnessing, even though he was many miles away.
Is it yellow now? he asked.
-Yes. -Yes. How do you know that? She replied. Is the same thing happening there too?
Her scientific voice denoted tension and excitement at the same time.
At that moment the communication was cut off. The cell phone didn't beep a beep that indicated that the line was saturated or communicating, it simply plunged into the silence. Ramsey looked at it and saw that it was off. Feeling more and more nervous, tried in vain to turn it back on. I wasn't responding to any buttons even though I had fully charged his battery that morning. Ramsey headed back. to the funeral with the intention of borrowing another motive, but something inside him said the rest would have stopped working, too.

He never took two steps on the sidewalk when he stopped at a strange image. that his brain had a hard time processing. A boy was trying to get the attention of his father's family. mother, but she stared at the changing sky in astonishment. The kid was pulling insistently of a dog that remained motionless, like a small figure of a porcelain. Two of its legs were perched firmly on the ground, while the others were kept in the air in an impossible balance. Ramsey looked at him without knowing what to do. The dog was still petrified, as if it were a photograph of himself. made while walking behind his owner. The little boy broke down and cried and the mother finally turned to him.
Struggling to understand what was going on, something caught his attention on the edge of his peripheral vision. Ramsey turned and was even more stunned. A squirrel will had frozen halfway between the branches of two trees. I couldn't do that. be. Ramsey rubbed his eyes and looked back in the hope that everything would be all right. an illusion, but no, the squirrel was still there, suspended weightless in the air, unaware to the pull of gravity. An annoying tickle bit him on the back of the head.
The sky continued to change color. Completely bewildered, Ramsey it just occurred to him that that mysterious flash of light had paralyzed the animals. He wondered foolishly if his wife was seeing penguins that were refused to make any movement. He tried to pull himself together and act. "That's what I know I'm good at it," he thought. He turned towards the road ready to enter again into the church and ask for help, but he couldn't get away from the ground. The order had come out of your but his foot didn't respond to him.
Without knowing how or when, he had completely lost control of his movements. He was still aware of what was happening around him but he could not even turn his eyes. His eyes were fixed on the road and he couldn't feel his eyes. his own body. I'd look at it all like it was a movie with a still camera on a point, without being able to do anything to interact with the environment. He was a pain in the ass. consolation, but was slightly reassured to find that people who were were also paralyzed. The mother and her son, reclining on the dog. A couple across the street, looking at the sky. And a group of six children, crossing a zebra crossing.
Had it not been for the beating of his heart and the murmur of the light morning breeze, Ramsey would have thought that time had stopped. But that couldn't be. The leaves kept falling from the trees, and a plastic bag described circles in the air, pushed by the wind. Apparently, only animals and people were affected.
Ramsey heard the sound of an engine approaching from his left, but he couldn't turn your head. In front of him, the schoolchildren were still in the middle of the street. A shudder of horror shook him as he anticipated the tragedy. His mind he shouted with all his might, but his lips remained closed, disobedient. The the front of a cleaning truck peeped out before his eyes. I was moving forward a little bit speed, but constant. The figure of the driver, visible behind the glass, remained as still as the others. Ramsey, impotent, watched in horror as the and the truck would lie on top of the little ones. Their bodies were run over by that heavy-duty vehicle, which barely veered slightly to one side. A crackle of broken branches reached his ears. But Ramsey barely had time to feel sorry for the children: the chain of events rushed around them.
It began with a strong sizzling sound, accompanied by a small flash of light in his right-hand man. Ramsey realized that the cell phone he was still holding had exploded, letting out a small spiral of smoke. At least he proved that he didn't I felt pain; in fact, I didn't even feel his hand. He wasn't the best comfort, but I was hoping the kids wouldn't have noticed the truck passing by. on top of it. Almost afterwards, he glimpsed small explosions inside all of us. the vehicles that were nearby. He assumed it was about the radio sets. Seconds later, the engine of the truck, which was starting to drift away, exploded and the hood was opened. it rose to hit the front moon. That didn't stop him: it went on. down the avenue as the engines of the vehicles it passed bursting. sequentially. Several cars started to burn and Ramsey knew that a lot of they wouldn't be empty, but with their occupants completely paralyzed watching. how the flames consumed their bodies. I've never felt so relieved before about that his son Michael had a motorcycle.
He heard violent detonations muffled by the distance, and soon several columns of smoke appeared lazily writhing in the distance in the city. If in a relatively isolated place like the cemetery several people had already died in a few seconds, he did not want to imagine what would be happening in an area full of electrical appliances and vehicles circulating everywhere.
And then, without warning, the movement and control of his body became part of him again. He dropped his cell phone, which began to burn in his hand, and then joined in the screams from all sides that reflected the fear and madness that everyone was suffering. Ramsey saw the truck crash harmlessly into a tree and the driver getting out of it, his arm wrapped in flames. People were running terrified in all directions, screaming hysterically.
Something rumbled above their heads. Ramsey looked up as he clearly picked up a very annoying metallic chink. His eyes met an enormous mass of steel falling toward him. He was able to distinguish the colors of the Panamerican Airways drawn on the side of the plane as it hovered over them. He didn't even make an attempt to escape. His last thought, just before he was crushed to death, was for his family. He asked God to respect his life. The inexplicable phenomenon, which would become known as the Wave, had the disconcerting effect of sowing the same questions in the frightened minds of all the survivors. What had caused that maelstrom of destruction? And most importantly, why?

Interesting post but I don't think that this post actually belongs in Steemstem.

STEM is Science Technology Engineering and Math.

Looking forward to any topics you may want to write about on that in the future.
