The Dragon's Blood (Part 62)

During which horrors await in the tunnels....

62

They left the fairy circle soon after, slowly, with a desperate silence. No one spoke anymore, as if any sound made by people who'd only just had a shouting match would bring the monstrous hordes back upon them, ready for blood.

Her pistol was out and she took point with Blake behind her, ready to order her in whatever direction his holy Master of the Universe desired.

The cell phones provided illumination, both of them, one held by her, right alongside her pistol, the other by Jacob at the rear. Their soft electronic illumination didn't help much, but they at least didn't trip over the charred remains of the dead Sahajin that surrounded their little abandoned sanctuary.

They reached the edge of the track after hopping over the once dangerous subway rails, the cold cement rising chest high to her.

Handing the cell phone back to Blake but not the pistol, most definitely not the pistol, instead holstering it within her jacket again, she lifted herself up and over the obstacle.

“Give me the cell,” she whispered her demand as she reached out for the phone, snatching it away from the bastard's hand as he offered it. “Stay here, I'm gonna check the area out, I'll be right back.”

Blake nodded and turned back to the others, leaving her alone with the unknown, her pistol and that miserable little light.

When she turned away from them and flipped the phone open, she realized quickly that even though the darkness was still on the really difficult to fucking see side, she could actually make things out a little better up here.

A back up light like on the trains, she surmised, it had to be, and it was close.

Squinting through the slightly less inky blackness, she thought she could make out the source of the illumination, dim though it may be. It was far ahead of her, but not too far that she couldn't scout it out herself before returning for the others.

She turned back again to Blake, finding him staring up at her, his pointed face eager.

“I see something up ahead, stay here.”

“What is it? What do you---” But she ignored him and went on her way, leaving him whispering his idiot questions to himself.

As she made her way towards the dim light, which flashed red far up ahead, she nearly tripped over something soft that gave way with a sickening wet cracking sound. Forcing her eyes away from it and carefully avoiding the pools of red blood, she tiptoed around whatever the hell it was and made a mental note to keep the children's eyes averted when they made their way through this killing ground.

Twelve more destroyed human corpses later and she knew she would have to blindfold those poor kids even while the mangled remains left themselves imprinted in her brain for future bouts of night terrors. The Sahajin had feasted in this subway station just as the Vampires had done so back at the train.

She wondered how many more had been slaughtered this dark evening through the tunnels beneath New York and wondered even more how a world that knew without the shadow of a doubt that boogie men really did exist would be like.

These dark thoughts inhabited her brain as she reached and immediately, without reservation, entered the corridor of the red light.
