During which Thomas Blake wins...

“What--- Zeus--- what --- the... what the fuck is he? ZEUS!!!” She shouted into the phone as it conked out, every last little bar on it's screen up and gone.

She turned this way and that, dialed the big bastard over and over but it was gone, whatever alignment of the damned stars that had enabled the silly little contraption to work for even the few moments that it had was gone, and she along with those with her were once again sealed off from the outside world.

She turned back to the others, acclimating herself once again to her surroundings. They were watching her, all of them eying her with, what was it.... suspicion?

     “What?” She ventured to ask.

It was Jacob that had been nominated to approach her apparently, as he was the only one who did, the others all staying a good ways back, the mother and her kids staring at her with those curious expressions. Blake, his face illuminated in the dim green light from thugboy's cellphone looked positively smug.

What the hell was there to be smug about down here, asshole? She thought as she shot him a venomous glare before turning her attention to Jacob the hood.

“Maam, listen, we been talkin'.” He tried to start.

“Yeah, fools do that, kid. Get with it, what the hell's going on?”

One arm went behind his head, scratching himself on the noggin, as he glanced back at the others, looking for support before continuing.

“Okay, listen, we been thinking we can't be staying here. Mister Thomas Blake here, you know he thinks this here thing with the fucking fairies is bullshit and when those things come back from whacking that guy who was helping us or whatever... there ain't fuckin' nuthin' gonna stop 'em from getting to us. He thinks... and you know what? We, all of us, we talked while you wuz talking to your boy up above and we decided that we should try and make a run for it, you know. We damn close to that station right there, see,” and he pointed one meaty finger into the shadows where all the Sahajin things had come crawling from. “He figures, and you know, we agree that we can make it now that that Blackmoon dude drew those big lobster things out and after him.”

She nodded her head incredulously, ignoring the poor frightened kid and instead turning to address Blake himself.

“So, you think you know something, huh rich man?”

Blake just shook his head, turned away for a moment before turning right back, his eyes challenging her.

“You think just cuz up above you're somebody that you can fucking play with peoples' lives, huh? You think you can lead them, huh?”

She got up on her feet and stalked over to the smug bastard, bring her face not six inches from his face. He didn't flinch this time, his cold, dead blue eyes just glared right back into her own.

“Listen buddy, I'm not just some fucking normal cop. I'm part of a damn strike team that deals with crazy fucking shit like we just had to deal with. Yeah buddy, the world is more than just stretched limos and fucking caviar. There's shit I've seen that will turn your fucking blood cold. Things so deeply fucking wrong you wont goddamn believe it.”

“That guy, that Blackmoon guy,” she pointed down the direction their otherworldly benefactor had disappeared. “He's one of them, shit he's more than that. My partner.... whose fucking one of them too... just told me that if there's one thing all these fucking … wrong things are scared of and that's him. That's Blackmoon, or whatever the hell he's called.”

“Listen lady, you've got this--” Blake tried to start.

“NO, YOU LISTEN,” she spat. “And you listen goddamn well. We ain't going nowhere. We are staying here in the middle of this damn fairy thing and we are waiting for the only goddamn thing fucking vampires, slime covered fucking gelly monster things, and big white shrimp things are scared of!! You got that, Mister Thomas-fucking-Blake!!”

But Thomas-fucking-Blake hadn't listened well, because that smug little grin hadn't left his face. No, what she registered on that meticulously groomed visage was the look of a man victorious, a man who knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he was about to get his way.

A hand touched her shoulder, a small hand, the hand of the little boy, his other one still clinging onto that of his mother, his large brown eyes peering up at her, wet with moisture.

“Please officer,” and he said it with such heartbreak, such innocent honesty, that for the rest of her life she wondered if it hadn't been somehow rehearsed. “I don't want my sister to die.”

And then, Thomas Blake truly was victorious.
