in #story7 years ago (edited)

National Geographic is set to launch its new mini series, "Mars", on the 14th of this month worldwide. It tells the story of the first human mission to Mars in the year 2033.

About the series

A fictional series covering a mission to mars in the year 2033, but with flashbacks to the year 2016, which seems to be the year projected when it all came into place.

In fact the choice of the year 2016 is significant, as this year has been full of talk, and action, as people like Elon Musk have demonstrated, about Mars and the possibility of sending a human to the red planet in the near future.

After having read about Elon Musk's vision, it looks like we have a case of art imitating in real life, though in a fictional setting, and I expect the serial to be received well by people around the globe.

The story line

Besides the curiosity people have about the planet, the story-line of this series suggests that the need to colonize mars is crucial for human survival, considering how we are basically destroying earth.

We also have a protagonist in Ben Sawyer (Played by Ben Cotton), who is a captain and the leader of the expedition, and who's voice-over narrates the story through the series, which

... tends to meander into metaphysical ruminations about the nature of humanity and the romance of tackling the unknown.

But the best parts are left for the flashbacks, back to the year 2016, where interviews are taken of people like SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, “The Martian” author Andy Weir, and NASA planetary scientists and former astronauts. These "flashback interviews" are woven in to celebrate and honor people who had an opinion on anything mars, and were bold enough to talk of colonization.

Educational value

Whatever your opinion of the series, it should be educational as the producers, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, seem to have gone on a limb to weave in the maximum amount of realism possible, and some of these efforts show.

Like the fact that radiation levels are almost 200 times than a year on earth, and the possibility of losing 10% of their bone mass while on the job. But how they manage to do that should be exciting!

Overall it seems an interesting and an exciting series which would enthrall anyone with a slight interest in mars, the inhospitable planet, now possibly colonized by man.

The sets, and production seems to be as realistic as possible, and I do look forwards to watch the series. I hope I enjoy it and wish the same for you!
