Robinson had already spent two weeks on the Island, but didn’t found anyone lived there. He wondered finding no human beings there. So, he was worried to think of how could he spend his life in such a lonely place? But soon he came to know that he was so lucky. He could have died like the other sailors on his ship, but it didn’t happen. Robinson didn’t have many clothes to wear. But he could have lived, because it was hot weather. Luckily, he had not been washed up on the coast of Africa; otherwise wild animals could attack and kill him there. But he was now safe on the lonely Island.
Although Robinson had not seen any wild animals so far, but he was not sure that there were no animals on the Island. So he started to search for such a place where he could live safely and also it should be near fresh drinking water. He required a roof which can prevent him from the scorching heat of the sun. He also needed such a place from where he could see if any ship was passing through the beach, so that he might be rescued. He had all these things in his mind while searching a place to build home.
He finally found a place which was located near a hill. It was a flat piece of land of a hundred yards wide and two hundred yards long. A cave was also there, which he used as a storeroom. According to Robinson that was a perfect place to build a home, because nothing could come down from above or easily come upwards from the land and also he could see if any ships were passing through the beach.
Robinson made a tent using a sail which he managed from the ship. However, he soon found that heavy rain could come anytime and he could not keep himself dry. So he created a big tent using big leaves which covered the first tent. Then he decided to make strong wall surrounding the both tents. It was not an easy task because no one was there to help him creating the wall. He had to do the entire job himself. He cut some numbers of woods by his axe and put into the land making semi circle around the tents. Then he made the top of every wood like sharp needle, so that nothing could climb over the wall. He also created second wall of wooden posts behind first and filled the vacant places with mud and stones. The whole process from managing wood to making tent took a long time. He didn’t make any entrance. However, he made a ladder, so that he can just get cross over the barrier easily. When he was inside the tent, he used to lift the ladder after him, so that no one else could get inside.
He had everything what he required to have inside the tent like stream of fresh water and he could now prevent himself from the attack of wild animals or men, the heat of the sun and the rain.
Robinson took all things inside the home when it was ready. He used the ladder many times to finish job. Although it was not a well decorated house, he was so proud of himself, because he did all things himself and created a home.
Robinson made a calendar, so that he could count days, months and years. He also started maintaining daily record in a dairy. The followings were recorded by him:
September 30, 1659: I, poor miserable Robinson Crusoe, whose ship almost sank during a terrible storm, came to this desert Island. The rest of the ship’s company was drowned.
October 1: In the morning, I saw that the wrecked ship had floated with the tide towards the coast. I hoped I might find some food and necessary things on board.
October 1-24: All these days were spent in going to and from the ship to get as many things as possible out of it.
October 25: It rained all night and all day. The ship had been completely destroyed. I spent the day in covering the things I had brought from the ship to keep them safe from the rain.
October 26: I walked all around the Island, and found a place to build myself a house.
October 31: I went into the forest with my gun. I killed a she-goat, and her kid followed me home.
Thus, he recorded all his actions in the dairy until the ink of his pen was finished. The next job that Robinson had to do was to make such a cave where he could safely keep all his necessary things and also prevent himself from the sun and rain.
