MARGAUX (An Original Short Story)

Margaux was five years old when Keith and Charlene adopted her. They were not rich, but they were kind and generous. She was showered with love and affection from the moment they’ve brought her home.

The little girl was beautiful. With her curly blonde hair and deep-set eyes, she had every resemblance of a cherub. When Charlene saw her for the first time, she just knew that she had to take her home.

Having her in the house was a huge blessing for the young couple. In the last five years, the wife already had three miscarriages, each one more painful than the last. Having Margaux around had somehow made them feel complete.

That was before Charlene’s fourth pregnancy.

This time, the couple wanted to make sure that the baby would be delivered safely. So they focused on her health, following all the doctor’s orders -- including complete bed rest that she had obeyed religiously. Both were very excited about their baby that they seemed to have forgotten about Margaux.

Every day, the little girl would stand in a corner, waiting for them to pick her up. But it never happened. Each time Keith would come out of their room to get something for his wife, he would indifferently pass by in front of Margaux, as if he didn’t see her. This made the little girl feel unimportant, and her relationship with her foster parents grew more distant in every passing day.

This breaks her heart. She misses her mommy and daddy so much. She missed the warmth of their embrace. She missed how Charlene would brush her hair before they slept.

“This is all the baby’s fault”, she thought resentfully as she stayed in the attic for the night. They didn’t even look for her.

The child was born at the same time as the first snow of the year had touched the earth. She was dreamlike, and beautiful as she was healthy. She was a gift from God.

They named her “Miracle”.

With the baby in their home, the couple barely had time to notice how Margaux stared at the innocent infant. She spent hours and hours every day dreaming of her sister’s death. She was so jealous and angry. She felt that the baby have made her life miserable, as she selfishly took the only family Margaux had known.

She knew she must do something to get her parents back.

Each night, they would leave Miracle in her own room, with the baby monitor plugged in. Once the baby cried, the device would alarm the parent to let them check on their child.

It was already an hour past midnight when Margaux decided that this is the perfect time. Ever so silently, she slipped into the infant’s room with a knife that she got from the kitchen, and slowly climbed into the crib. Just as her foot had touched the sheets, the baby woke up and started to cry.

Margaux panicked, and instinctively stabbed the baby many times to shut her up. Miracle died in an instant.

Looming over the mess she had made, she silently rejoiced for her victory, until she remembered the alarm. She knew they’d be here any minute. The little girl hurriedly climbed out of the crib and headed to the door, eager to get out fast.

She stopped halfway when she heard footsteps rushing towards the room. She froze completely and let herself fall into the floor, just before the couple came in.

Poor Charlene screamed in horror when she saw all the blood. She felt like being killed over and over, seeing her baby is dead. Keith stood strong to comfort his wife, despite the fact that he’s also torn into pieces.

Somewhere in the room, Margaux stayed perfectly still – a little sacrifice wouldn’t hurt, knowing what awaits her when this is all over.

Soon after, the police came in to investigate, but failed to solve the case. All their doors being securely locked from the inside would have made it impossible for anyone to break in. The case was hopeless.

The only evidence they have so far was the murder weapon – a huge kitchen knife, stained by the blood of an innocent infant. Unfortunately, even the weapon couldn’t lead them to anyone as it mysteriously didn’t bore any fingerprints.

They found it lying on the floor in the left side corner of the room approximately 3 feet away from the crib….
