EAGLE FROM THE RUBBLE: CHAPTER 22

Two days after the incident, as Euna was trying to get Nwamaka to eat some food, the door opened and Natachinyem walked in. The duo stared at her as if she was something out of the blues. They were not expecting her.

"Why do you stare at me as if you have seen ghost?" she asked, putting down her luggage.

Euna recovered first
"You are welcome, my daughter." She said helping her with her luggage. "How is your sister and her family?" she asked.

"They are fine"

"Natachi, welcome" Nwamaka said avoiding her eyes. This was becoming a habit with her. Natachinyem thought, quickly

"Nwamaka, you look pale. Are you sick?" she asked, looking her over critically.

"She is perfectly alright. Just a little fever" Euna replied

Natachinyem quickly put her things away.
"Let me greet Papa and Nkeiru," she announced moving towards the door.

"This is one thing I detest about you. You have just returned and without even sitting down or changing your clothes, you are already preparing to go out," Euna complained. "You haven't even told me anything about your sister and her family."

"I am not going out. I just want to greet them. I will be back soon," she said as she went out before Euna could do any further thing to stop her.

Contrary to her statement, Natachinyem was long in coming back and when she did, she spoke neither to her mother nor to Nwamaka. She quietly retired to her room. She noticed that Nwamaka's bed was not in its usual position. She did not bother herself about this. She lay down counting the ceiling, waiting for dawn. Euna did not go after her that evening; she decided to see her in the morning.

Early the following morning, before either Euna or Nwamaka could wake from sleep, Natachinyem was already on her way to Ibadan to see her sister, Oyibo. She left a note for her mother to this effect. Euna in the interim girded herself for whatever might be coming and waited.
