Date night - A short story

"Lucas!" he shouts as he once more has to climb the stairs "Lucas, please! Sophie will be here soon and you know how important this night is to your dad" John tucks him up in bed once again and kisses his son on the head as he remembers how hard it must be for Lucas to see his dad move on.
"Dad"
"Yes! Lucas what now?"
"I can smell smoke" on that John remembered the apple pie and rushed downstairs to open the oven and reveal what he had feared.
"Great!" he shouts as he reaches in to pull the pie, subsequently burning his finger in the process.
At least he still had the main course which he was sure Sophie would enjoy. It was Lasagne with salad dressing and garlic bread and it looked delicious.
Then John's heart suddenly jumps as hears the sound of a car pulling up outside and with a glance of the clock he realizes that Sophie had arrived.
John quickly rushes around the kitchen trying to make sense of the disaster zone that he had created while searching for the box of matches to light the candles he had previously laid out on the table.
As John was heading towards the front door to greet his guest and flicking on the stereo as he flew past, he hears movement once again coming from upstairs. "Lucas!" "Lucas, get into bed son, please !"
"But I need a glass of water dad" replied Lucas intrusively as he pitters across the landing.

DING DONG!!
The doorbell sounds and after tripping on his shoes and face planting the glass of the door, causing Sophie to jump out of her skin as she wonders if this is the correct address, John eventually opens the door to welcome Sophie into his home.
"Hi Sophie, please, come in" say's john as he greets her with an awkward kiss on the cheek
"I wasn't sure if I had got the right house for a second, mmm something smells nice" trying not to laugh at the distinctive smell of burnt pasty.
"yes erm, I have made lasagne, I hope you like it"
suddenly Sophie's expression changed as what she had failed to inform John was that so was lactose intolerant.
At this point and with the distant cry of Lucas calling down the stairs to let his dad know that he has flooded the bathroom, John sits down with his head in his hands. "I'm so sorry Sophie, I just wanted this to be perfect and I have messed it all up" Sophie placing her arms around his shoulders smiles and replies "John! how about we order a Chinese and see if Lucas wants to come and sit with us while we watch a movie together" John raises his head and looks into Sophie's eyes "You, me and Lucas is as perfect as this night could be" and It was that moment that Sophie knew that John was the person she wanted to build a life with.
