Episode 1, No Entry, follows a small group of children trying to figure out what to do now.

Part 4

Sam rode his bike down the empty street to find water. He carried a yellow plastic mop bucket that he had found in the library on the bar between his legs, steadying it with one hand and steering his bike with the other. Where could he find water? Where hadn’t the other kids looked? He could get water from the river, but he knew from getting cuts before that he was supposed to wash it out with clean water.

The pharmacy. Raabe’s Pharmacy downtown had bandages and all kinds of stuff he might need for a wound. He remembered they had candy and a fridge with a clear glass window filled with soda. Maybe no one had found it yet, maybe the pharmacy had water too.

He parked his bike outside the pharmacy. He tried to open the door in the front, but it was locked. The front of the store had large glass windows. He went to the alleyway right next to the building, looking for something to help get in. Between two dumpsters in the alley, he found half of a busted red brick.

He went back to the front of the store and hurled it at the large window in the front. He expected it to go through, but it bounced off, leaving a splintered crack. He picked up the brick again, stood back a little further and threw it. This time it went through, littering the ground with shards of glass. He grabbed the bucket, knocked down the sharp glass at the bottom of the window and carefully climbed through.

The smell of the store reminded him of an antiseptic spray that his mom used to put on his knees and elbows when he scraped them—the spray stung really badly. It wasn’t the best smell ever, but he knew he could find things he needed here. He went to the refrigerator with the clear glass door first. It was still fully stocked with soda, juice and water.

He went to the back of the store to see if there were more liquids in the back. Sure enough, there were cases of the same types of stuff that were in the fridge. He grabbed a case of water and went back into the front part of the store.

There were aisles and aisles of medicine and supplements. He knew that some of them would probably help in this situation. The problem was that he didn’t know what any of them did.

He found the bandage aisle and grabbed a few boxes of large bandages, some gauze, tape, and since his mom always put that stuff in the brown bottle called hydrogen peroxide on his cuts, he grabbed a bottle of that too. By the door was a clothes rack, and since Dylan needed a new shirt, he grabbed the first one he saw. It was white and had cupid shooting an arrow through a heart. The shirt said, “Be my Valentine.”

He carried the bandages and stuff in his folded up shirt out to his bike. He used the door this time. He went back in and grabbed the water. Getting everything back to the library would be a challenge. He had the yellow bucket. He put all the bandages and other things into the bucket, and there wasn’t a lot of room left for water. He put as many bottles of water as he could into the bucket, got onto his bike, and heaved the load onto the center bar.

It wasn’t easy, but he started peddling. He had started on the sidewalk, and when he got to the end it sloped down to meet the road. He hit a large bump where the cement from the sidewalk met the black tar of the pavement, and he lost control of the bucket. The bucket and the contents tipped off to one side, and he crashed down hard to the other side. He landed directly on his right knee. It hurt badly.

He got up, brushed the dirt off, and repacked the bucket. He examined his skinned knee. His dirty shorts were long enough to cover the knee and protect it a little, but small trickles of blood still seeped out of the scrape. He got back on the bike, and started again.
