NYC Mashup Post + Sndbox Headquarters Tour

in #story6 years ago (edited)

As we meander our way back across the US to Minnesota (we’re currently in Ohio) I’m still reminiscing about what an enlightening two weeks we had in New York City! Some incredible work was done on HardFork and amazing memories were made.

My brother, Curt, works for Saks Fifth Avenue and we’ve been trying to arrange a trip to the city for years and it finally happened last week. Curt treated us to an awe-inspiring behind the scenes tour of the flagship Saks Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan.

The store was built in the 1920’s, and although the public areas of the store have been updated, many of the employee areas have not. We were escorted by my brother and Saks’ chief engineer through a labyrinth of hallways and secret elevators to the rooftop for some stunning views of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center.

Aside from the million dollar views from the rooftop, we saw many incredible sights on the inside, including -- an original DC electric motor that helped power the store almost a century ago...the cork-lined fur vault, where rich socialites stored their valuable furs during the summer months, private showrooms for celebrity shoppers, as well as the HVAC equipment that keeps Saks’ flagship store comfortable for its well-heeled clientele.

Next came what was probably the most unique sights of them all, an elevator large enough to carry a semi truck (with trailer) down to the basement loading dock. This was truly a marvel of engineering.

Here are some still photos of the elevator as well as a video of the lift in action.

Next came a self-guided tour of Saint Patrick's Cathedral. We could almost imagine the Kennedys worshipping on Sunday as an explosion of color filtered through the stained glass windows.

Last but not least, we hopped onto the subway to the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn to tour the new @sndbox headquarters. Just look at that intricate tile work on those subway walls.

It was so nice to hear more about current and future @sndbox initiatives and have a fun and inspiring conversation with @voronoi, @hansikhouse, and @natureofbeing. @natureofbeing just happened to be in the city for work and it was a pleasure to finally meet her face-to-face.

Our conversation just reinforced my belief in the power of Steemit and @sndbox as a whole. These are great people, doing great work, and I urge you all to follow and support them.

@natureofbeing, Me, @voronoi, @hansikhouse, and @dougkarr.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Have a great week everyone!

Seem very amazing trip...the view from rooftop is fantastic..i really like the church...its good if you post directly photos then making videos of pics...because we can see clearer...

Thanks, the church was stunning!

What a privilege to tour the inside of Saks, so cool!! I have been wanting to go inside St. Patricks again too, I haven't been since I was a child.

I'm also digging all the mosaic in every subway stop - even the most basic street "signs" in mosaic are exquisite.

And Eric, I am so glad to have met you and Raymi, and Doug and seeing Kirk and Michael again, there's nothing like meeting in person and it confirmed even more how awesome you guys are! More soon please....

It was a very cool experience, Ruth! Some of the mosiacs were so dirty you couldn't even tell what color they were but you could see they were beautiful under the decades of grime. I'm so glad to have been able to meet and hang out with you guys too! I hope we can all meet up again soon. Safe travels back home!

also bravo to flagging spam....I agree that it's time

A huge day, and an equally huge elevator! It was so awesome hanging with you, Curt, Raymi in Midtown, then @natureofbeing, @voronoi and @hansikhouse in BK. More soon please!

What a fun day it was! How could I have forgotten the chocolate?! Yes...more very soon.

yes more soon please for me too!

Saks Fifth Ave Rooftop has stunning view and that truck elevator is very big man.Enjoy the trip
@hardfork-series is the best creative group

that's quite a solid awesome day and productive too :D nice pictures

Sound like a very productive trip. Great to hear that the HardFork is making progress. The behind the scenes tour of Saks must have been a real treat, I have never seen an elevator of that size before, and I am Texas where everything is bigger, or at least we claim it is.
Have a safe trip home.

Thank you @sultnpapper! The tour was certainly a special treat. My brother has been head of facilities for them for about 15 years and it was nice to finally meet up. Haha, that elevator was a true work of human ingenuity. Where there's a will, there's a way. : ) Hope all is well, man!

It was a beautiful day for you to end the weekend on a positive not :)
thanks for sharing the post !!

What a treat to see the rarely seen parts of Saks Fifth Avenue.
I too believe in steemit

Eric! I am so mad at myself for not getting back into the swing of things just a bit sooner, haha, I can't believe you were in NY and I missed you. It looks like you had an amazing time, it's great to see Mike's smiling face again (he's a sweetie!)
I love the music you chose for the videos, there's an art to that :)

That would've been a lot of fun to meet up! There will be plenty of other chances though. I'll be coming back to NYC pretty frequently for the next year or so. This trip was so much fun! We just got home a few hours ago after racking up over 3000 miles on the car. So glad you enjoyed the videos!

@voronoi is certainly not a small guy...lol!

Viking blood?
Cheers
