Green Pastures Part 4

in #story6 years ago (edited)

Laura’s eyes were opening slowly to the dim light shining from the blinds. At first she wasn’t sure if yesterday’s exploit had indeed occurred or if it was all just a dream. She and her partner sleeping in the bed next to her had a lot to drink when they celebrated the feat. With an empty stomach she snatched a bottle of water and brought it to the swimming pool for a few laps. A group of 5 unsupervised children were already playing in the artificial blue waters.

Where are your parents, she sung.

All she got as an answer were a bunch of funny noises. She found Neo in a good mood at the complementary buffet. He took his headphones off to greet her cheerfully which took her by surprise. She had rarely met a left wing activist who was so chipper in the morning, there was truly an innocence about the guy which contrasted his desire for vengeance but it didn’t take long for the conversation to get politically charged.

The pork industry is a leading cause for methane emissions. Did you know that a particle of methane is 10 times as devastating as a particle of CO2 as far as green house effects are concerned?

I did know that she said, ironically putting a peace of bacon in her mouth.

If I wasn’t fighting human trafficking I would probably be an environmental activist he said nonchalantly.

Why does one have to exclude the other?

Well aside from spreading myself too thin I’m not even sure activism can save our oceans at this point.

His tone of voice was unaltered by the heavy nature of the topic which was fascinating.

What should we do now? Asked Laura

Well the logical answer would be to find allies in the press to increase the potency our long game he replied; but for now I say we should take a couple of days off. Too many get caught because they obsess over the cause to the point where it becomes religious fanaticism regardless of if it’s religiously motivated.

That took her by surprise.

What do you mean.

The moment you loose yourself to being a soldier, war becomes your religion.

You mean like Jedi.

He laughed joyfully.

Yeah!

It scared her how smart he was. She wished she possessed such patience but her anger was clouding her judgement yet at least she was aware that this was the case.

What’s wrong with religion?

Nothing and everything. It’s too anthropocentric. It’s short sighted and relates mostly to the human experience. Uses it as a reference point. That’s something you can’t afford with astrophysics.

Are you an astrophysicist as well?

No but I think these people gain wonderful philosophical insight from their field.

Like the fact that we’re just a spec of dust in the universe.

Like the fact we are smaller still.

Does small necessarily mean insignificant.

Not necessarily but cults and religious organization play that smallness up way to much.

I hear ya.

They spent the rest of the day at the beach enjoying the cheesy light hearted nature of the LA crowd. For a moment there it felt like they had known each other for a long time. It would be so easy to fall for him but she had to stay focused on their objective. There was no room for romance on this enterprise.

You’re an awesome friend! Had a long conversation with my boyfriend. Although he hasn’t read all the story so far, he has helped me with the part to come where they are breaking into Neverland Ranch to pass time.

That made me laugh. But not in a bad way :^)
