La Llorona

I grew up on scary stories told to us by my grandfather. He always knew so many and being that he was a respected man, not to be mocked ever, you'd know to take him seriously. One of my favorite stories growing up, 'La Llorona'/'The Wailer' has been told throughout Mexican folklore for many years and one that some of you might even know about. Everyone always has their own version but I'll tell you the gist of how it was told to me.

The story starts with a beautiful woman named Maria. She was very desired but her vanity and pride made her inferior to every man in her village. She was very poor and finally gave in to a man who matched her high standards. They wed and had 2 children.

One night she was approached by a carriage with her husband on board alongside another woman. He told Maria he was leaving her for the other woman and he'd still take care of his children and proceeded to devote all his attention to them alone.

Enraged, Maria took her children to the river and drowned them. She watched them slip away down the river and immediately realized what she had done.

Grief-stricken, she took her own life by drowning herself in that same river. After that Maria haunted the river night after night crying in regret of the death of her children.

"Where are my children?" where the wails cried out.

Some would say they would see her walking alongside the river in that same white gown she was burred in.

Crecí escuchando las historias de miedo que nos contaba mi abuelo. Siempre tenia historias y siendo que él era un hombre respetado, a no ser burlado nunca, sabrías tomarlo en serio. Una de mis historias favoritas crecer, 'La Llorona' se le ha dicho a lo largo de folklore mexicano desde hace muchos años y que algunos de ustedes podrían incluso conocer. Todo el mundo siempre tiene su propia versión, pero te voy a decir lo esencial de la forma en que me fue contada.

La historia comienza con una hermosa mujer llamada María. Ella fue muy deseada, pero su vanidad y orgullo la hizo inferior a todos los hombres de su pueblo. Ella era muy pobre y, finalmente, cedió a un hombre que hacía juego con sus altos estándares. Se casaron y tuvieron 2 hijos.

Una noche se le acercó un carro con su marido a bordo junto con otra mujer. Él les dijo a ella que se iba ella por la otra mujer y que todavía se haría cargo de sus hijos y procedió a dedicar toda su atención a ellos solos.

Enfurecida, María llevó a sus hijos al río y los ahogó. Observó deslicemos distancia río abajo y se dio cuenta de inmediato lo que había hecho.

Desconsolada, se quitó la vida ahogándose en ese mismo río. Después de que María perseguía el Río de la noche tras noche llorando en arrepentimiento de la muerte de sus hijos.

"¿Dónde están mis hijos?" donde los lamentos gritaron.

Muchos cuentan haberla visto caminar al lado del río en ese mismo vestido blanco en el que la enterraron.
