CHAPTER 2

A shiver ran down her spine. She hadn’t realized how many witches and warlocks the shadow creature affected, and now that she knew, her passion grew. It wasn’t just about getting retribution for her father’s death anymore; it was a journey to stop the havoc the shadow creature ensued in its efforts to cast the hex. Many witches’ and warlocks’ lives were at stake.

Beatrix looked at the silhouette figure in front of her. “Where do I find the castle?” she asked.

“Avlehdore Castle is very far away. It lies beyond these woods, past the villages, and on the other side of the Zabahkor Sea—the sea of the dead.”

The dark figure looked at the certainty and passion in Beatrix’s eyes. “Are you sure this is what you want to do?”

“Yes,” she said. “I need to do this for you—for everyone.”

“Very well then,” the figure said. It raised its hand and pointed into the woods. “Continue this direction. It will lead you to the villages. There you will be able to find a map that will lead you to Avlehdore Castle, where the creature lives. You will need to pick up supplies in the village for your travels. It is a very large sea, and it will take you many days to cross it. The castle is right on the other side.”

The figure paused for a moment. “Be careful, Beatrix. This is a dangerous path you are traveling. Ghastly creatures lurk throughout this world—they will not hesitate to kill you.”

“I’ll be careful, Dad,” said Beatrix.

She walked up to the figure and gave it a hug. The figure hugged her tightly. She felt the solidity of the figure fading away, and suddenly it disappeared in a haze of smoke. Beatrix’s heart sank a little; it was like she lost her father again. Arthur walked up to her and gave her a big hug. She wrapped her arms around him. She thought about all the people the shadow creature had killed and how many more he still would. Arthur’s mother was also in danger…if she was still alive. Nothing in her life had ever felt more important than this journey. She knew she had to stop the shadow creature…stop it or die trying.
