CHAPTER 7

Beatrix opened her eyes. She stared up at a dirt ceiling. Long, spindly strands of roots dangled from it. A blue orb of light hovered near the ceiling, illuminating the room. She began to sit up. Her arm throbbed in pain.

“Now, now,” said a voice from the corner. A tall man walked up to her. His silver hair glistened in the blue light. He was an older man. He walked toward her, holding a large, decorated staff. “The herbs are doing their work, I can see,” he said, pointing at her. Beatrix looked at her arm, which was covered in some sort of paste.

She watched as her bruises slowly disappeared.

“Wh-where am I?” asked Beatrix quietly as she slowly awoke.

“Scotland, my dear,” said the old man with a twinkle in his eye.

“W-who are you?” she asked the old man. She looked around her frantically. “And Arthur…where is Arthur?”

“Don’t you worry, Beatrix. Arthur is in the other room, and he will be just fine,” said the old man in a calm voice. His icy green eyes lit up as he continued, “My name is Atticus—Atticus Lezaur. I am so happy to have finally found you—and just in time it seemed.”

He glanced at the doorway to see Arthur peek around the corner. “Quite a tumble you had,” said Atticus to Arthur. Arthur ran to Beatrix and gave her a big hug.

“Ow,” said Beatrix.

“Oh, sorry,” said Arthur shyly. Beatrix smiled back at him. The scratches that once covered his face had almost completely faded away. Arthur turned and looked at Atticus. “It is such a pleasure to meet you, sir,” he said. “I have heard many stories about you, truly inspiring!”

The old man smiled as he waved his hand across the ground. Orange sparks fell to the ground beneath his hand. Plants began to sprout from the earth. Vines grew and wrapped around each other to form two chairs. “There you go,” said Atticus. Arthur and Atticus took a seat.

Arthur reached over and held Beatrix’s hand.

“It is time for a new hero to rise,” Atticus said, looking at Beatrix. “The world of shadows has given rise to a new, powerful creature.”

Arthur stared at Atticus, enthralled with his flowing bright-silver robes. Atticus continued. “The world of shadows is trying to take over the magical world and your world, Beatrix. They know of your great power. They have been planning this for a long time—ever since the great war.”

Beatrix looked at Atticus. “W-what do you mean…how could they have been planning this for that long? The war happened during my grandparents’ era.”

Beatrix looked at Atticus. He furled his brow and looked down at the earth beneath him. “I’m sorry, my dear,” he said solemnly. “I wish the past had a fairy tale to offer you.”

Beatrix’s heart started racing. “What?” she said, looking at the old man. “Tell me!” she demanded.

The old man’s eyes glistened. “As you wish,” he said. “However, I think it would be best to show you." Atticus took hold of Beatrix’s hand. A flash of blinding light filled the room. The walls faded away, and the world went into a blur.
