CHAPTER 18

They walked down the hall and past the front desk. “Leaving already?” asked the little woman.

“Yes, thank you for everything,” said Beatrix to the woman in a sincere voice.

“You are most welcome, dear,” said the woman as she smiled back at Beatrix. The cage on the desk was covered in black velvet fabric.

“It is bedtime for Ida,” the woman said, noticing Beatrix’s glance at the covered cage. The woman walked up to Beatrix and gave her a big hug. She whispered in Beatrix’s ear, “Be safe; we are rooting for you.”

Beatrix stood back and looked at the woman with surprise as she smiled back. Arthur and Beatrix walked out of the little orange Victorian house, down the steps, and onto the sidewalk. The moon was now high in the sky and smiled sideways at them. It was a beautiful night. The many windows of the buildings were lit with an amber glow.

Arthur glanced down at the compass from time to time to make sure they were going in the right direction. They had no idea how far they had to travel. They reached the edge of the town. Beatrix glanced back at the sparkling city lights behind her and then in front of her at the darkness ahead.

They continued walking down the side of the road. The cityscape shrunk behind them. The air was cool but calm. The moon lit the world around them in a soft cool glow. The road turned away from where the compass directed, and they followed where it pointed. They were walking across grassy land. The blades swayed softly. Beatrix felt the blades of grass pass over her fingertips as she walked. Arthur pulled the compass out of his pocket and held it in front of him. The compass cast a red light around him. It seemed to be getting brighter as they walked. There was a tall hill ahead. Beatrix and Arthur slowly climbed it. Beatrix was slightly out of breath about two-thirds the way up the large hill.

“Can we take a break for a moment?” she asked.

Arthur nodded, and they sat down on the grassy slope of the hill. They looked out and could see the tiny little town in the distance. Beatrix couldn’t believe they had walked that far. She opened a decanter of water from her pack and took a drink. She handed it to Arthur and he did as well. Beatrix gazed ahead, looking out into the night. Arthur reached into his pocket and took out the chunk of gold that had started to take shape. He smiled as he gazed down at it. He placed it back into his pocket and turned to Beatrix and said, “Shall we continue?”

“Sure,” she replied with a smile. They stood up and continued on their way up the hill. As they neared the top, they saw a large forest and a mountain range in the distance.

“Look!” said Beatrix with excitement as she pointed at the mountain range and forest. She looked down at the woods and wondered if that was where the portal was. She remembered from the vision in which she saw the portal that she had seen mountains around her.

Arthur looked at Beatrix and noticed the fear growing in her eyes. He reached over and held her hand. A sense of calm fell over her. Whatever was in her path, she could handle it, she thought.

They slowly made their way down the large hill. Beatrix jumped as she saw a large object in her peripheral vision. She turned quickly to see what it was, only to find it was just a tall boulder. It reminded her of the shadow creature. She thought about the shadow creature for a moment and what it had put her and her family through. It had to be stopped.
