I awoke. Strong, warm arms held me. I opened my eyes to see James sleeping next to me. I scooted closer to him. His eyelashes fluttered as his eyes raced under his eyelids. I smiled.

My loneliness had almost completely melted away. The rainstorm that consumed my heart had been transformed into a beautiful summer day. I was so happy to have found James—or I was happy that James found me. I never thought I could be happy again. I didn’t know if I was allowed to be. I couldn’t help but feel guilty—like I was cheating on Thomas—but the sad truth was that Thomas had been gone for a while now, and there had been no signs of him returning. Over the past months, in my mind, Thomas had felt more than simply lost—he had felt gone. I searched for him for months, and when I couldn’t find him, I began to mourn him. I still loved him deeply, and that was the part of me that never wanted to be with anyone else—but would he have wanted me to spend the rest of my life alone? Thomas always wanted me to be happy, and James made me happy. There are some questions in this world that have no correct answers.

I thought about Nadine and what she would think of James. She kept telling me that I needed to move on. She saw how broken I was after I lost Thomas, but she could see that my endless searching for him was tiring my spirit. I closed my eyes and recalled the last conversation we had about Thomas…

“Honey, I know it hurts, but we’ve looked everywhere for him.”

Tears raced down my face. “I-I just want to know how it happened! How did I even get to that exorcism place? I didn’t want it—I NEVER would have wanted it!” I sobbed.

“I know, I believe you. But you have to stop torturing yourself with this. Life is cruel sometimes—leaving unanswered questions to haunt us. But it’s been months now, and you need to start taking care of yourself. I’m worried about you.”

Nadine gave me a hug. “I know, but how can I just forget about him and everything we’ve been through together?”

“Honey, you will never forget him—it will be a blessing and a curse. You need to open yourself up to the possibility that he isn’t coming back and let yourself move on.”

I nodded and wiped away my tears. “I know you’re right, but I just need a little time.”

Nadine smiled. “You take all the time you need.”

James’s arm twitched, and I opened my eyes. He was still asleep. His eyes raced under his eyelids still. A small crumpled piece of paper rested on the floor beneath his leather jacket that was draped across a chair. I sneaked out of bed and picked it up. It had a phone number written on it next to a time, 10:30. That isn’t my number, I thought. Curiosity got the best of me. I dialed the number and listened to it ring.

“Open Heart Ministries, this is Doug. How can I help you?”

I dropped the phone. I recognized the voice—it was him—it was the man who had performed the exorcism.
