We left our embrace. James looked at me with a serious expression. “You must have a million questions for me. But let me start from the beginning.”

I grabbed a pillow and held it tightly.

“So, the day after I began sharing your body, it started. The dark entity returned. It knew it couldn’t possess you anymore, so at first, it started trying to lure me out of you. When it realized I wasn’t going anywhere, it started trying to hurt you. I tried talking to it, but it never spoke back. I wanted to know why it was bothering us—why it was bothering you. At first, its attacks were little things—things I could handle. But then it became fiercer and smarter. I started getting scared—I didn’t know what it was capable of. I knew that I couldn’t stay a part of you any longer—it seemed angry that I was a part of you. It was getting too dangerous. So, I made up my mind—an exorcism was the only way. The dark entity wanted me gone, so I had to fake it. In the time I spent researching back when you were possessed, I learned that exorcisms only remove spirits—they don’t destroy them. So, I had my plan—to have myself removed from you before the dark entity’s attacks grew any more dangerous.”

“Wait—how do I not remember any of this?” I asked.

“Because I took over your body and mind. Any memories you had of these events I locked away in the back of your mind so you wouldn’t remember.”

I felt uneasy about this but let him continue.

“So I—or should I say—I had you call and schedule the appointment for the exorcism. I needed help getting you there, though. I could control your actions and thoughts, but it wouldn’t make sense to have you show up willingly for an exorcism, so that is where James came in. I found him on our way to the place, put on a little show, and asked him to help you by taking you to that address. I could tell that he liked you a little, so there was not much convincing to do. He took you to the place, and again, I put on a show. James stayed there and watched from the doorway. The moment I was ‘removed’ from you, I possessed James. I saw it as my only chance to see you.”

“But why didn’t you tell me any of this?”

James looked at me with sympathetic eyes. “It was too dangerous for you to know anything about it. The dark entity couldn’t know that I was ok. It couldn’t know that I was in contact with you. The entity went crazy when it knew I was with you—it seems to not like me for some reason. The moment I was removed from you, the entity’s attacks stopped.”

I looked across the room at a picture of Thomas that rested on the dresser. I looked back at James. “Is James ok?”

“Yeah, he’s fine. I am controlling his thoughts as well, so he doesn’t even know any of this is happening.”

I felt bad. I understood why everything was the way it was, but I felt bad for James.

“It was the only way I could figure out to be with you,” he said.

We sat in silence for a little while. My thoughts darted around a million miles an hour in my head.

“Even though you know this, you cannot tell anyone—it’s too dangerous.”

“I understand,” I said. I was sad about this new restriction but happy to have Thomas back. I thought about the first day I had knowingly met James. “Delivering papers, huh?”

James smirked.
