Sadly, this is a Disorder that millions of people deal with across the World. Depression is a major factor in development and if not caught at an early age can spin out of control in a Hurry. This breakdown you speak of is just like your doctor said, you held in emotions and frustrations probably over many years and eventually like a Volcano they erupted.
