This is an excellent story and very exciting! I had a little trouble with translation, i guess by battery you mean radiator? The pipes connected in the building and sound traveled through them.
I think the old man stayed with you in that building, not in person but in spirit, i don''t think he meant you harm or meant to scare you, he just wanted to let you know he was still with you :)
yes you're right, it means radiator. In my country, it is customary to call a radiator a battery.
