This Allegory Might Melt Your Crypto Dreams And Ambitions

This is my entry for a competition being run by @swissclive to write a fiction in less than 300 words.

What The Crowd Thought Was A Good Idea

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Matilda who lived by the sea. Every day, she would take her dog, Steemy, for a walk along the beach and collect sea shells because she was just that cute!

But there was one morning when she found something else that came out of the ocean and it was even more amazing than any shell. It was a huge block of ice with a polar bear frozen inside.

“That's Rexmiihed, the king of the polar bears!”, exclaimed Steemy.

Matilda had heard of this monarch who was renowned for his generosity. “If we can set him free, he will surely reward us,” she thought to herself. She knew that help would be needed.

She called her local radio station and asked them to run the story in the lunchtime news, making sure that they made a request for volunteers to help melt the ice.

It worked! Fifty people came to help, armed to the teeth with cups of coffee, spicy curries and petrol bombs. Matilda gave the order - “have at it!” And so began The Great Conflagration of Crypto Beach.

But the ice was so incredibly cold that it wouldn't melt. The volunteers began to mutter. “I know, let's carry the ice to the top of the volcano and throw it in. That will definitely be hot enough to release King Rexmiihed”, said Steemy. In the back of their minds, they knew it was a gamble, but everyone upvoted that idea. They hoisted the iceblock onto their shoulders and off they went.

They threw the frozen polar bear into the volcano.

The ice melted.

The polar bear died screaming.

The volunteers regretted not paying more attention to the fact that they were gambling, but it was too late.

Sort:

You get burned by ignorance when playing with fire of any form.

That is very true. When I was a little kid, I once lit a plastic bag on fire and swung it around and around. I still have a scar on my thumb. Hence, I never bought Bitcoin. ;o)

I hear ya. We're all kicking ourselves in the rear for dismissing the bitcoin.

That was brutal.... lol. We are all in such a rush to make a quick buck that our impatience may destory the v ery thing that we seek.

Bye polar bear :(

All good stories start with “Once upon a time”. You are the only person who thought of that!

Children’s tales are supposed to have a have a happy ending. What made you think throwing the lovely cuddly polar bear into a volcano and burning him to death was a suitable ending to a children’s story? I don’t think the poor bear dieing screaming in agony was a good end.

Can you explain the meaning of your last sentence, any also why the emphasis on the words “they were gambling”

I'm Irish - Irish stories don't end happily.

The volunteers understood in the back of their minds that there was a risk that the polar bear might not survive, but they were so focused on doing the work to get a reward that they took a gamble that it'd work. Perhaps the steam from the melting ice would blow him into the air and to safety? That'd be a 500 word story, though.

I had an idea for a story and turned it into an allegory for 'investing' in cryptocurrency. It's supposed to serve as a warning rather than more of the "rah-rah, we're all going to get rich!" stuff.
