Let's remind ourselves about deforestation and its effects

in #stemng6 years ago
Among the many blessings that our beautiful planet is endowed with, trees are and have been invaluable to life. Its usefulness and relevance are just innumerable. From the production of oxygen for respiration to the production of timber for construction and beautification, trees have played and are still playing a vital role in the existence of mankind. However, With the vita roles comes the over-exploitation and their wanton use. The rate at which humans are removing trees for various use far outstretch the rate at which the removed trees naturally regenerate. Hence, a time might come when there will not be enough trees in the environment to sustain the various ecological processes that ensure the continuation of life. Should we be concerned?

Advancement in science and technology has no doubt led to the development of mega-cities and skyscrapers in places where trees naturally occupy. Little regard is given to trees when construction of buildings, roads, and much other infrastructural development are being considered. How developed a place is, becomes a measure of the number of trees (or vegetation generally) that is present in that environment. The more the vegetation/trees, the less developed they are considered and vice versa. Maybe the “association of forest” should have been in the best position to protest, but the rest of the ecosystem seems to benefit more from the presence of trees than trees themselves. You might want to ask 'how?'

Forests, especially trees serve as natural habitat for a wide variety of animals. From the small arthropods to bigger chordates, the forest houses more living organisms than human can ever provide for themselves. Birds, for instance, prefer to build their nests on trees, and it makes it easy for them to remain safe and navigate around. Millions of other organisms find the trees to be home for them.

In addition to being a natural habitat for organisms, forests play an important role in the fixation of carbon. We are at a critical point in time where global warming is a burning issue and the entire world (except some few blockheads) is fighting against greenhouse gases. Trees, on the other hand, is designed to help reduce these gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases absorb radiations from the sun to warm up the planet. However, increase in their concentration in the atmosphere would mean an increase in the amount of radiation being absorbed. Consequently, they cause an increase in the temperature of the planet which has been a process responsible for a change in climate. Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas due to its ever-increasing concentration in the atmosphere through human activities. The potential of forest to sequestrate this gas is unlimited, provided there is enough forest on the planet. However, with increasing carbon dioxide concentration and decreasing forest areas, we can only hope for a miracle.

Trees can serve as saviours in times of troubles just as Spiderman would in its movies. Some winds have the capacity to achieve high speed and possess energy strong enough to destroy lives and properties, but trees (where present) would have done the rather unannounced job of breaking the energy long before hitting human shelters. Eventually, we wouldn’t really know what would have happened, or would we?

Forests and their component trees generally support life through the production of much more oxygen than needed for their own respiration. For every molecule of carbon dioxide fixed through photosynthesis, a molecule of oxygen is produced. Although plants are considered oxygen neutrals in the long run, their short-term oxygen production contributes to what humans and animals take-in to survive.

The aesthetic and general welfare contribution of trees to our environment cannot be overlooked. Have you ever had to take a shelter under a large tree on a scorching day? Only then would you have fully appreciated the existence of trees. Obviously, the relevance of trees to our environment cannot be overemphasized, yet humans keep removing these trees at a much faster rate than they are being replaced.

According to live science , deforestation is described as deliberate actions of man that lead to permanent removal of forests so as to make space for other uses such as constructions, farming etc. Majorly, farmers chop down trees because they need space to plant their crops or feed their animals, so as to generate money. Businessmen who deal in timber are another big cause of deforestation. Trees are also used to make papers, not to mention the other various uses like furniture, roofing, burglary, bridges, canoes, and many more. However, human actions that do not lead to permanent removal or conversion of forests to other use but lead to a reduction in the forest layers and productivity are termed degradation. The two terms even though often used interchangeably and produce similar effects, are not the same.

Degrading or removing forests at a faster rate than they are being replaced have some profound effects on both biotic and abiotic components of the environment. Statistics have shown that over eighty percent of animals that live on land and plants exist in the forest and may not actually survive if the forest is destroyed. Thousands of species have gone extinct due to the removal of their natural habitats. These plants and animals have their value to humans and the ecosystem. In a nutshell, deforestation causes an imbalance in the ecosystem.

I said it earlier that plants are oxygen neutral in the long run. They only store carbon and when they are removed and used for a variety of purpose, the carbon dioxide sequestered in their systems returns to the environment. Lesser forest cover means lesser sinks for greenhouse gas storage, more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, increased global temperature and more erratic climate.

Availability of forest covers helps to control erosion as well as protect watersheds. Roots keep layers of the soil together and keep them from being run off by fast-moving water. Fewer trees mean that rainwater can easily wash off the layers of the soil. Forest and its components also serve as heritage, provide food and medicinal remedies to illnesses and might be an insurance against future food scarcity and outbreak of diseases.

It would be unfair to conclude without highlighting the way forward against what could be a big ecological disaster in the future if not tamed. Whereas some think that reforestation is the ultimate remedy to curtail the trend, a synergistic approach of protecting the existing forests and establishing new ones would go a longer mile than mere reforestation. Protecting forests does not mean denying humans total access to forests and what it has to offer, but regulating its use to promote sustainability. If enough efforts have been put in place in the past, the ugly trend that we currently have would not have reared its head.

Thank you all for reading.

The best day to plant a tree is twenty years ago; the next best day is today. But most of my people say a place full of trees is underdeveloped and still "bush". To make it "developed", we need to cut down all trees and replace it with concrete floor :)
The funny but sad reality of how many view deforestation in Nigeria. A good article.

The funny but sad reality of how many view deforestation in Nigeria.

I am very surprised by this statement Green. I think I generalized the perception and care that you guys have towards the environment to all Nigerians. So, my guess is that recycling is not part of the daily culture there, quite yet?

@abigail-dantes, recycling and environment is not something that is considered to be of utmost importance. There are still a lot of things the country is grappling with. Chief amongst which is the massive unemployment, lack of power, poor road network, poor emergency services, healthcare in a comatose condition, security issues in some part of the country (especially the Northern regions), etc. All these make environment come to about No 24 in the list of the government's priority. There is still some part of the country that is still very much underdeveloped. By underdevelop I mean areas that are just with no roads, forests, etc. On the issue of recycling, we do not have a culture that thinks, let me recycle this plastic instead of dumping it on the nearest dumpster. What is happening now is that people have made a business of recycling. You can see many young men moving around and picking up plastics in the dumpster, along the road, or just about anywhere they could lay their hands on to sell it to recycling plants later. Metal/scrap dealers are making a killing too. For instance, a 63kg bad batteries can be bought by these dealers for about $50. That may not seem like much till you realise the government's monthly minimum wage is less than $100.

The only time you'd see environmental activities is when oil companies like Shell have a disastrous spill that renders many communities land useless in the oil-rich state of the Naija Delta by destroying their means of livelihood such as poisoning rivers and killing fish in the process plus destruction of their farmlands.

There is this misconception that we still have a lot of forests, so there is no need to conserve any. But this is not very true. I remember the bushes in my hometown I used to explore as an adventurous 7-year-old during Christmas holidays. Those bushes are now "developed." Cut down, with concrete houses in their place; the forests are gradually disappearing that I'm afraid we may have to show our children forest very soon in a forest reserve.

Oh Green, thank you you for this most amazing reply. What an in depth insight into your country and culture. At times, it felt as if I was reading about Brazil. Green, if the monthly minimum wage is less than $100, what is the cost of living?

Cost of living differs depending on the part of the country you are in. Some states are much cheaper than the other. If you, for instance, stay in Lagos, a single person may spend an average of between $6 to $9 daily. A young family of two kids spends between $11 to $15 daily. I'm assuming you cook and don't eat out, if you do, that amount doubles :)

The minimum wage is a joke. If you are paid only the minimum wage, you can survive in some states where you don't spend money on transport; you have opportunities to grow your food and live in your own house or where you don't pay rent. The cheapest average yearly house rent (2 rooms apartment) alone in Lagos is at least $700.

The amount may appear "cheap" but when you consider people get paid $50 or less for a month, then you can then imagine $700 is quite a large sum of money.

Thank you @greenrun. I stay in Osun where about 50% of the landmass is green vegetation. SOmeone that stays in lagos where less than 10% of the landmass is green would be laughing at me for staying in the bush. Just imagine that kind of mind set.

You enjoy the very best of environment. Clean air, super cool environment, less pollution (both noise and air), less traffic, less crime, etc. You, my friend, is enjoying the best of the country.

I am telling you but a typical Lagosian will call me 'local'. :)

Deforestation is a real problem everyone wants to live in very well developed place with skyscrapers and all of that but it all comes with a price "deforestation" but then am not against development and total urbanisation but the presence of trees shouldn't be a draw back for development. What's my point? Early this year if am not mistaken was mared with hurricane after hurricane and tsunami but what if they went through a forest reserve first before hitting residential areas would it's impact not be reduced? Sources of natural disasters relating to wind and water are pretty defined I think it's time the world considered strategic afforestation to reduce the impact of natural disasters relating to wind and water.

Well put. The presence of forests could have significantly lowered the impacts of those winds. Our actions could either make or mar us.

With all these , I don't know if urbanization is doing more harm than good to us but one thing is for sure and that is our forest reserve are depleting and that in turn affects use.

It is really a dilemma situation. Should we remove forests for urbanization or is there a way we manage to urbanize without removing much of the forest? I am sure the later seems preferrable

I will channel my comment on the important use of the trees in the area of medicine.
Most of the drugs, substances used in treatment of various illness are gotten from most of this trees and plants. Just like you put it here

Forest and its components also serve as heritage, provide food and medicinal remedies to illnesses and might be an insurance against future food scarcity and outbreak of diseases.

What would have happened if quinine was not discovered , obviously these tropical vampires (mosquitoes) would still be singing praises in our blood and ears every night.

There importance cannot be overemphasized.
Everything in life is all about equilibrium, in as much as these trees are serve beneficial uses to mankind, establishment of equilibrium is the key. I am happy that most people are now beginning to understand the vital role these trees play in the ecosystem. I believe when more awareness like these are created, the populace will appreciate these trees , though several regulatory bodies have enacted laws that will guide deforestation in Nigeria.

Even most landlords now build houses with trees around the compound if it is spacious enough, this singular act means he/she understand the vital role the tree plays.

I was traveling to Lagos , I saw a hectare of land in ondo state filed with trees that were planted, newly, these was done, obviously in an attempt to encourage forestation. Balance is the key to sustainable ecosystem.

Been a while @gentleshaid

@Cyprianj

Indeed, it's been a while. Real life engagements wont let me great :). I am of the opinion that the current effort being put in place is not up to scratch, especially from the government. I am using Nigeria as a case study now. How many protected forests do we have in Nigeria? Zilch! Even the supposedly protected ones are not protected in the real sense, if you know what I mean. Individuals can try, trees can be planted but if the existing ones are being removed at a faster rate, the end is doom.

Thank you @cyprianj

we owe a lot to these trees and we are not doing as much as is expected of us. Planting a tree would really save lives!

i doff my hat my oga!

Planting trees as well as sustainable use of the existing forest would go a long way.

Thanks Mr Rafael

We are at a critical point in time where global warming is a burning issue and the entire world (except some few blockheads) is fighting against greenhouse gases.

Ohhh, so, the world is aware of this issue, still, illegal felling of trees is on the rise.
If this continues, i dont know how humans are going to cope adapting to the environment
Thanks for writing in this direction
Kudos on your effort

Nigeria is one place in which almost nothing works. Even with laws against illegal felling of tree, the law enforcers chose to become illegal feller last last.

Thanks sir.

Deforestation is also the turning of forest land into productive land for agricultural uses. Which can result in better and more abundant production of food and materials, thereby eliminating periods of want and lack. Economically, deforestation has contributed much in giving many communities the opportunity to make positive changes in their lives. Although deforestation also leads to increased global warming, it is kind of a necessary evil.

If you take a peek at world's deforestation chart, agricultural activities have a significant input in deforestation. Instead of removing all the trees, farmers can practice taungya farming to curtail deforestation

taungya farming you say, how many of these farmers actually know what that means or what it entails? Do we even have a functioning forestry department in our country. With this, all farmers must be known and probably be registered with the government so they can go back check if they are honoring the pact.

Thousands of species have gone extinct due to the removal of their natural habitats.

I couldn't agree more with you. If there is no action to be taken to reduce the current rate of deforestation or increase the rate of reforestation, we will see the number turns million soon.

We can imagine the number of species that have been rendered homeless between the period of publishing this post and making this comment. Unless something drastic is done, species might be in for a tough, homeless time

Hello @gentleshaid

Speaking of deforestation and its negative effects, It's quite unfortunate what the world we are living in is fast turning into, no thanks to urbanization/civilization.

The chief reason for the humans stance towards the consequences of deforestation was rightly and perfectly captured in this passage...

How developed a place is, becomes a measure of the number of trees (or vegetation generally) that is present in that environment. The more the vegetation/trees, the less developed they are considered and vice versa.

With this, I am really bothered of what the future holds for mankind. Very scaring

Very rich and interesting post.

Regards.

@eurogee of @euronation and @steemstem communities

Thank you @eurogee. Unless laws are made to protect forests and establish new ones, the future generation might be in big trouble before they are even given birth to.

Exactly. Keep it coming. ✌️

I'd I have the words to use I would use them from the article to the comments..... Why haven't you guys said something about this deforestation

We don't even have real forest in this part of the world again.... @GREENRUN has said the butter truth

Nice piece @gentleshaid

Thanks Osariemen. It is truism that virgin forests can no longer be found anywhere in Nigeria and it is a sad situation.
