11 Year Old Boy Bypasses Standard Security MeasuresteemCreated with Sketch.

According to Reuters, in less than thirty minutes, a boy from the iGenz generation managed to compromise a copy of voting software. The compromise involved changing information within the system. While the time for the young boy stands out, he was not the only member of the iGenz members who breached the voting site. The breaches were designed as a part of a security convention that took place recently.

Three facts stand out about this story:

  • Companies do not understand the technology they're using. By prioritizing innovation over discernment, companies are caught off guard by a major breach.
  • Move quick and break things is a terrible philosophy with anything that requires digital security. By misapplying non overlapping magisteria, we don't understand when we're dealing with exceptions.
  • Bigger hacks are coming and they will be much costlier. This story just highlights the reality that firms are not ready to handle this next generation. You've been warned.

Considering the software and situation, this provides another example where firms may be unprepared for changes in development behavior. Given the compromises at the convention, most firms are not ready to handle the rising challenge in security. Consider what this means for communities like the cryptocurrency community - many of these communities will not be prepared to meet the rising challenges in the future, yet most of what you hear is positive about these ideas, even though none of them use basic principles of security.

If your firm develops with a similar technology to what was compromised, or if you don't understand the weaknesses of the current technology you're using, consider working with our sponsor FinTek Development and their Hidro Security.
