An Irish Castle in Texas - SteemUSA Monday Photo Challenge

in #steemusaphoto6 years ago (edited)

Scott and I collect counties in the United States and we try very hard to get photos of the county courthouses. When we do get a photo, we call this a “cherry on top” because it is not always possible for us to get a photo. We have found that we love learning the history of each courthouse because each one has something amazing about them. In 2015 we started collecting counties in Texas which has 254 counties which we have visited over half of those counties. Out of those counties, we have 37 courthouse photos.

One of my favorite Texas courthouses is this one in Center in Shelby County. Shelby County, created in 1837, is one of the original 13 counties of the Texas Republic, founded in 1836. On May 1882, the first courthouse caught fire and the building was lost.

This building was built by an Irish mason who had recently immigrated to the U.S. He decided to build the new courthouse in the style of an Irish castle because he wanted to show off his skill. It was completed in November 1885 and is still being used today and it is one of the five oldest county courthouses in the state.

The story, there's always a story, is that the local people were upset because an Irishman was building the new courthouse and many townspeople would dismantle various parts of the building hoping to cause him to lose the contract. Thankfully it did not work and we still have this amazing building.

That is a fascinating story! And a great old court house!

It is really pretty and the square around it was pretty too.

What an amazing story! I love when you get to know the rest of the story! Good luck!

Most definitely! There are so many amazing ones out there.

I love your signature!

This place is just another of the unique gems in your collection. Lovely!

I just had to have one.

The townspeople action back then was really funny, well thankfully, it didn't work😀, they wanted one of them to build it?

The court house is really beautiful and has a really nice structure and nice designs on it. Thank goodness they didn't try to destroy it after the building was done, we wouldn't have had the opportunity to see this beauty.... 😀 Actually, it looks so well maintained, can't imagine that it has been there for so many years....

So glad it still with us.

if you follow me, i will back. thanks. love you all

Thats pretty impressive getting to all the counties or the ones you have so far, and this is a cool looking Courthouse

Good luck in the contest

Thanks @tattoodjay. We have visited 442 so far.

Wow. people are so strange! Dismantling the construction because he is Irish. wow.

That was the way it was back then. Many people in the early 1800's saw the Irish as a plague. Funny how people react to different cultures.

And what a superb picture this is, thank goodness the Irish man could build faster then the local's could dismantle - it is indeed a fine structure and that it still stands today is a testament to the design and build. Really fascinating to learn the history behind Shelby County - thank you so much for sharing.
