(Proposal) Steemians should take advantage of the STEEM platform to unionize against exchanges and demand for fair service: let us start with PoloniexsteemCreated with Sketch.

Disclaimer

Being a libertarian, I am against labour unions in the real world because:

  • they are usually protected by legislation which is always a bad idea
  • participation is usually not voluntary
  • they distort labour prices (wages)
  • they delay and bureaucratize labour negations
  • their leaders are usually corruptible
  • their leadership positions usually attract the same psychopaths attracted to political office

STEEM union

Leadership

Any #STEEMunion would have to be a headless movement similar to a hashtag on platforms like Twitter. This way we don't encourage busybodies trying to become its leaders. Social influencers (those with the most number of active followers) would naturally become defacto leaders but that is unavoidable and quite fine as their leadership would be transitory and not official with title and tenure.

Purpose

The purpose of the #STEEMunion would be for collective bargaining with #exchanges in order to demand for fair service if not preferential service. Since a great number of Steemians use exchanges, we have bargaining power if we can coordinate our efforts. We would communicate publicly through posts and threaten to reduce our positions in a particular exchange. Since exchanges have STEEM accounts, we could mention them in the posts to try and get their attention. In our private emails to the exchanges we should also advice them to check their mentions.

If we threaten and the exchange still does not act in our favour or does not do so in a timely manner, we should then individually effect the threat until we illicit a favourable response from the exchange.

Poloniex

Recent problems with #Poloniex exchange provide us with the opportunity to test out the #STEEMunion concept. We could try to get answers to the problems and speed up their resolution.

Call To Action

  • reply to this post or create your own post and reply with the link
  • give your opinion or share your experience
  • threaten to withdraw your cryptocurrency from @poloniex (it doesn't just have to be STEEM or SBD, which have transfer problems hence the complaint)
  • make sure not o share sensitive information
  • tag the post with #steemunion and #poloniex
  • mention @poloniex
  • email @poloniex and advice them to check their mentions

I decline to comment on your proposal itself, however the following requires a response:

Any #STEEMunion would have to be a headless movement similar to a hashtag on platforms like Twitter. This way we don't encourage busybodies trying to become its leaders. Social influencers (those with the most number of active followers) would naturally become defacto leaders but that is unavoidable and quite fine as their leadership would be transitory and not official with title and tenure.

This is not how social groups work. De facto leaders end up becoming leaders in title. People want and indeed need leaders. There is absolutely no such thing as a headless movement; movements may appear headless temporarily but any movement which becomes large will not remain headless.

You can take the wheel, or someone else will.

Yes, nature abhors a vacuum, as they say.

Rather than threatening existing exchanges, wouldnt the STEEMunion be better placed to get STEEM onto more exchanges, competition should then solve the problem (you mush believe that as a Libertarian right?). The union can then help steemians understand these optins exist and let the exchanges own poor/good performance guide the users.
Im specifically thinking about decentralized exchanges like Lykke, which are better for users than Poloniex.

I hope decentralized exchanges get more users to improve the liquidity problem.

The problem with decentralized exchanges is that they are a bit more difficult to securely use than centralized exchanges. I hope people will eventually cross over to decentralized exchanges once they get over the need for handholding from centralized exchanges, which in my opinion is currently pathetic if not nonexistent.

Check out Lykke though, its very easy to use, I suppose its what you call semi-decentralized, the exchange provides liquidity and matching, but you hold your own private keys.

Agreed, therefore my suggestion to use this union as a means to acheive that

Write a post to:

  • explain the advantages of decentralized exchanges
  • give useful strategies to work around the liquidity issues and lack of token variety

Then tag it with #STEEMunion and I will upvote it, resteem it and promote it on Steemit.chat and Twitter.

Hmm, that seems to be a lot of hard work, cant you just take my word for it and send me some SD.

OK let me have a think about it

Threat is a term that implies that intend to initiate some type of violence. Theft and neglect of duty of care are both types of violence, meaning that what we are proposing to do to @poloniex is self defence. Plus there is a fine line between coercion and asserting your rights, I think this sits in the latter category.

And yes, I agree, this #steemunion could also be a mutual aid society for both education and defense of the rights of members.

Maybe a bad use of words by me there, but my point was why use effort to try and remediate Poloniex (which may never work), when that effort can be used to increase market competition.

Poloniex transfers are enabled. Are they working? Did anybody try yet?

Upvoted and resteemed. It is a valid initiative but it might need some work to iron it out.

In my opinion a union is a bit too much. We could be better off with working groups or commeetes, created for a specific task with members who show interest. These ahwg's could be terminated when their purpose was met or void.

A Poloniex group can be our pilot project 😊 This behavior is an issue which has to be addressed and fixed. Withholding funds, not carrying transactions through is a fraud. Not answering to questions and support tickets is bad policy.

That could be our stand, without threats, arguments and strong opinions only...

Sounds like a plan!

Don't forget to add the activism tag and link in activism practice on steemit.chat.

Thanks for the heads up on https://steemit.chat/channel/Activism_practiced

Thanks also for the #activism suggestion, which I have implemented.

I for one am having an ongoing problem in that a good amount of Steem has been locked up/disable/stolen... for a couple of weeks now: https://steemit.com/steemit/@kyusho/poloniex-vs-steem

Once I regain this (if ever), I will not be using Poloniex ever again.

So here is an opportunity once again revealed in problem, the first person that creates the Steem exchange... maybe even as an integral part of the Steemit Platform, will do good numbers and eventually (especially if integrated into Steemit), great income numbers just from the Steem community.

For me it is far past incompetence, it is now into fraud or sedition against steem.

It would be great if #steemdev could add other cryptocurrencies to the internal market:

I think it s a good idea keep going with this idea and bring it to light

excellent work, resteeming. I will use this tag also.

This is an awesome idea! I'm with you on this, especially in this first test case. Resteeming
