Hacktoberfest Is Less Than a Week Away!
Been wanting to get involved in open source? Here's your chance to get started and earn a free T-shirt.
If you're a programmer who's been wanting to get into the world of open source, but aren't quite sure how, or if you're already an open source contributor looking for new projects, Hacktoberfest is for you.
Every October, VPS provider and all around cool company DigitalOcean sponsors Hacktoberfest, an event meant to get people involved in open source projects, and to raise awareness of open source in general.
And of course, the best part is that, if you register for Hacktoberfest and open just 4 pull requests on GitHub during the month of October, you get a 100% free T-shirt delivered to you, to commemorate your accomplishment.
Your pull requests can be to any open-source project on GitHub. The only rule is that you have to contribute something real; "spam" pull requests that don't contribute anything to a project don't count.
Not only can you contribute code, but open-source contributions of documentation, graphic design, and anything else that's helpful to the project are both counted and encouraged.
If you're not sure what to work on, DigitalOcean will give you a head start with a list of projects (submitted by project maintainers) that they publish on the Hacktoberfest home page. But you're not limited to those projects; you can contribute to any project on GitHub.
I'm not affiliated with DigitalOcean or the Hacktoberfest project, but I've participated and I have a couple of Hacktoberfest T-shirts of my own! It's a great way to get into the world of open source software...and who doesn't like free stuff?
I should also mention that this is an international contest, and the T-shirts ship free to almost any country.
