This is the concluding part of the Waste disposal methods. You can see the Part 1 Part 2 We discussed about Landfill and Sanitary Landfil in the Part 2.
Today we will look at incineration, composting, and recovery/recycling as a method of waste disposal.

Incineration

Incineration is a method where the wastes are burnt in large incinerators. The wastes are burnt in the presence of oxygen. It is a type of Thermal waste disposal. The wastes are subjected to temperature of about 1000 degree Celsius, after incinerating, the wastes are converted to ashes, gas or fly ashes. The fly ashes are those ashes that drifts out. Incineration has numerous advantages and disadvantages such as
Advantages

• Rapid reduction of waste at least to 20% of the initial waste volume.
• Low cost of transportation
• There is decrease in the release of harmful greenhouse gas

Disadvantages

• It causes air pollution
• Disposing of ashes generated by burying it can cause leaching problem.
• Some of the waste burnt can actually be recycled.
  Incineration is mainly used for disposing infectious wastes such as your medical wastes.
  Incineration is mostly practiced in countries where there is no space for landfill.

We have other thermal methods of disposing wastes known as Pyrolysis and Gasification

Pyrolysis and Gasification

They are almost similar in the mode of operation with Incineration. They breakdown wastes at very high temperature. Pyrolysis breakdown wastes in the absence of oxygen while Gasification breakdown waste in the presence of very little oxygen.

Composting

Composting is an easy Do It Yourself (DIY) biodegradation method. It uses the organic wastes generated from the kitchen, farm and then turn it into nutrient for your plant.
The Biodegradable process is allowed to sit in a place for weeks/months for aerobic microorganisms to degrade it. Composting is a very safe and an environmentally friendly method. However it has some disadvantages such as taking viable space that can be used for something else and it is also a very slow process, you have to wait for months before the microorganisms decompose the wastes.
Composting is practiced on Industrial scale, and techniques like windrow composting, vermicomposting, static pile composting, and in vessel composting are used. Source

Another method follows the Composting process but in the absence of Oxygen. This is called
Anaerobic Digestion

It is a method where biodegradable wastes are breakdown in the absence of oxygen by the actions of microorganism. Anaerobic digestion process produce Biogas which is a renewable energy. Source
The Biogas can serve fuel purposes or turned to natural gas.

Recovery/Recycling

Resource recovery is a method of finding another use for already discarded materials while recycling is a method whereby waste materials are turned into new and useful ones. Recycling is the perfect method of waste disposal. It reduces pollution which is the bane of other types of disposal methods.
