Waste Disposal Methods Part 1

in #steemstem6 years ago

Good day steemians

Sequel to my contribution to @euronation blog where I discussed improper waste managements, and how it cause problem for developing countries Link.
I believe it will be of great value if I can further continue the series in my blog.
Today article will explain the different methods of disposing waste. We will look at the advantages and the disadvantages associated with each method.

Waste Disposal

According to Britannica

Waste disposal is the collection, processing, and recycling or deposition of the waste materials of human society. The term “waste” covers both solid wastes (refuse, or garbage) and sewage (wastewater) Source

You can see Waste disposal involves all activities from collection to the final stage which is disposal. The wastes collected include both Solid and Liquid wastes.

Therefore we can say that there are 3 main stages of waste disposal which are:

  • Collection
  • Sorting
  • Disposal

Collection- this stage include all activities to collect waste. Household wastes are either put inside the waste bin, or taken to the roadside waste containers. A vehicle that collects waste then packs the wastes from the roadside waste containers, or from individual homes.

Sorting- this is the most tasking stage. This stage includes all activities in separating the wastes collected. We have different types of wastes Household, Industrial, Medical, and Agricultural. Thus, there is need to sort wastes according to the type. Wastes can be hand-sorted, glasses, plastics, metals, etc are all sorted and grouped according to their nature. Some of the wastes sorted can be recycled, or reused.

Disposal- this is the final stage where the wastes are gotten rid of. Either by recycling or by other methods of disposal, which we are going to discuss next.

Methods of Waste Disposal

Methods of waste disposal include

  • Open dumps
  • Open burning
  • Landfill
  • Incineration
  • Recovery/Recycling
  • Composting

Open Dumps

In most developing and under-developed countries, this is the most practiced waste disposal method. Here, the solid wastes are just dumped in open areas. All sort of solid wastes are discarded in uncovered areas. The wastes are neither sorted nor treated. This have adverse effect on the environment, and the individuals living in the area. The aesthetic value of the area also reduces. Open dumps serve as haven for rats, flies, and other vectors that spread disease. The water run-off from this open dumps, can get into nearby water, thereby contaminating the water and may cause infection to people that consume it. Most Developed countries have outlawed Open Dumps

Open Burning

It is the second most common type of waste disposal method. It involves burning the solid wastes in open areas. The wastes are not sorted, they are burnt together. The smoke from the waste is released directly into the air. This is a very harmful method, because some of the burnt wastes may include toxic materials, which when inhaled causes respiratory problem. Carbon monoxide (CO) is one out of a number of harmful gas released. Most developing and underdeveloped countries utilize this method due to the low cost of implementation, rapid reduction in waste volume.

The remaining Waste Disposal methods will continue in the next part

Humans have the responsibility of taking care of their environment. But the real issue is that nobody will do it because everyone thinks that somebody will do it.

In Nigeria land fill, open dumps, open burning is what is majorly obtained

Looking forward to see landfill method cause I think is the best

Gret work sir. This is so educative. How i wish our government can engage some people or group of companies to recycle our waste. Most of our domestic waste are recycleable to give tangeble productivity. If alot of money can go into this, then it will have a say in the growth of our economy.
