Bizarre Natural Phenomena Vol. 44 - A Waterfall Within The Water (The Underwater Waterfall In Mauritius)

in #steemstem6 years ago

Welcome once again, Steemians! A new week has just begun and today I am taking you on a helicopter ride above the island of Mauritius. Did you get your seatbelts fastened? Let's take off!

Our flight begins and we can see the green forests and mountains below us. As we head southwest to the sea we marvel at the blue shades that surround the island, the waves that kiss the shores and our eyes catch an image quite anorthodox. At some point the waters seem to be poured into a sea fault. Is it, is it an underwater waterfall?!

So it seems

The image, marvellous as it looks, is nothing more than an optical illusion!

And who is the magician?

Mother nature of course!

Reveal the trick, please!

Mauritius is a relatively young island in the Indian Ocean that formed around 8 million years ago thanks to volcanic activity in the ocean. A group of islands, known as the Mascarene Islands, are currently "sitting" on the same oceanic plateau, the Mascarene Plateau (an oceanic or submarine plateau is an elevation of the seafloor created by volcanic activity from underwater lava flows).

The island is surrounded by a quite narrow underwater shelf (a relatively shallow and flat underwater piece of land), which forms a lagoon that sits between two volcanic peaks (to the West: Le Morne Brabant and to the East: Mount Laporte and Pilton du Fuge). A coral reef also surrounds the island. As you leave Mauritius, a deep drop-off of almost 4000 meters takes you down to the abyss. The rift begins from Pilton du Fuge and reaches 1.5 kilometers offshore from the island, where it cuts off the coral reefs from the rest of the sea. In the pictures you don't see water falling into a deep fault, but sand and silt sliding down the plateau's edges moved by the ocean currents. The water of the lagoon is believed to have higher salinity levels than the ocean water, therefore it is denser and moves along with the sand and silt, making the "visual effects" more intense.

The real underwater waterfall does exist, though... kind off. As we move to the edges of the island shelf, the denser water and sand sink to greater depths within the rift. Too bad we can't see it from our helicopter :P

Thank you so much for your time!

Until my next post,
Steem on and keep smiling, people!

Wow, in the pic it really looks like a waterfall!

I spent 2 weeks in Mauricius some years ago in a family of locals. The Island is really beautiful and the people there very welcoming when you embrace their culture, especially if you get involved (I bought a local drum over there , learned how to play it, had my guitar with me too, and joined them for some cool jams and parties :-))

Highly recommended for a break, especially if you enjoy mingling with the locals!

What an experience you had there @muphy! I picture you having fun over music nights out in the open, with torches all around and various traditional dishes to try. Did I come any close?

You must be psychic!

That's exactly it! Just add the local Rum ;-)

I was totally immersed with my improvised host family. I had made a friend over the Internet from Mauricius (genuine friend, not what people usually think...), and I was warmly welcomed by her entire family when I popped by to say hello.

There were from modest origin (basically all men of the family were manual workers), yet all were incredibly warm and kind. I miss them.

You revived within me this souvenir of ten years ago. This was a very bright human episode in my life. Hey, I might write a post or two on this experience...

People who work with their hands usually have the warmest hearts. I can imagine what their hospitality was like. Our modern lifestyles are so "complex" that we need to escape through nature, good friends and real human touch (now you made me miss the guitar nights in my friend's garden) :)

It would be great to give us a glimpse on your journey ;)

Thank you very much!

Oh I am so glad you are doing this post today @ruth-girl!!!
Firstly because Mauritious is one of the places I love and secondly because I have swimmed at this very special place and snorkeled in this underwater waterfall!!

I want to find the photos I have from there....God I have thousands and thousands of photos and it's sonewhere in there!

But the really amazing thing I can tell you about this specific place is that you should be very carefull not to go out of the reef, since you then enter the oean and you will get carried away!
Depending on the current, you might then end up either in Australia or South Africa....literally dead or alive lol! Since some of the most dangerous sharks are on these waters!!!

But still even when you snorkel on this waterfall you have to be also very carefull since you can easily be enchanted by the beauty of the corals and the colorful fishes you meet and go so deep by the currents that might be fatal!

I have one picture for you though, from this beautiful place!
While on the surface of the sea, and just before entering the area of this wonderful underwater waterfall for snorkling ;)!

Oh, melancholic view...

It is AMAZING!!! Now why don't you do some digging and get us a special Mauritius post? M
And make us jealous!! :P

Thank you for the tips and lovely photo!! :)

It's on the list coming @ruth-gir ;)!

It's true that it looks like a vertiginous drop diving underwater. Amazing nature.

Thank you for reading! :)

I was trying for 30 seconds to catch that bird... lol
I saw this before and I find it amazing, but I think that there was some place on the bottom of the ocean where you can also find an actual lakes or river in the sea? It gave the same impression, but still, watching this form the air in live must be spectacular .

Haha! Did you catch it in the end? :P

There are underwater lakes and rivers, you're right. I even wrote a post on one in the Gulf of Mexico:

Thank you for reading!

That is really amazing. I wonder if it is a safe place to dive or are there weird currents that would pull you under?

Amazing images too, so serene yet powerful.

According to @alinak15 who went snorkelling there, it can be dangerous if you're not careful.

Thank you for reading!!
