ANTIBIOTICS AND MICROBIAL RESISTANCE !!!!
Hello dear Stemians. I decided to write about a new topic on my blog which concerns medicines. If you follow me you should already know that I work as a nurse for the last 32 years. All these years of my nursing career, I have deal with a lot of nursing incidents urgent or not. Also I have used almost all the kind of medicines intravenous, hypodermic and per os. Today I will write about antibiotics.
Antibiotics are antimicrobial chemicals which are produced by fungi, bacteria and plants. They act by preventing a specific biochemical reaction of the microorganism. Antibiotics interfere with the cell wall composition of microorganisms, inhibit some reaction of metabolism of microorganisms, They are involved in the transcription, transcription of the genetic material of microorganisms. They cause disturbances in the plasma membrane function.
The discovery of antibiotics revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections. However the inappropriate use has the effect of creating strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
There are no antibiotics against the viruses. Because antibiotics generally act by inhibiting the production of substances in bacteria, fungi and protozoans, they are not effective against viruses, as they do not have their own metabolic mechanism, as they are obligatory cellular parasites.
In order to effectively treat diseases caused by these new resistant strains, there is a growing need for the discovery of new antibiotics.Antibiotics act selectively in the sense that they only damage microorganisms and not human cells. Αccording to medical science, their over-use leads to more resistant bacteria, in other words bacteria-monsters!
For example, if you have a virus-induced illness and you take antibiotics, they will not kill the virus that causes you the disease, while at the same time some harmful bacteria in your body will become accustomed to the presence of antibiotics and with time to withstand and resist them.
The more resistant a bacterium makes to antibiotics, the harder it is to kill it. If you are infected with resistant bacteria, doctors should give you more doses of stronger antibiotics but have more side effects. So you will be more time ill and you will need more time to heal.
Medical science consider bacterial resistance "one of the biggest problems in the world". Many diseases that until recently were easily cured with antibiotics are difficult to cure. Such diseases are pneumonia, meningitis and tuberculosis that still exist even today. The worst thing is that not only anyone who takes unnecessarily antibiotics is at risk. There is a risk and whoever infectsby someone with a durable microbe, there is a risk of side effects and toxicity.
The most common antibiotics which used widely today are Quinolones, Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Aminoglycosides, Erythromycin and Clarithromycin
Take antibiotics only if the doctor has given it to you. Take them at the dosage recommended by the doctor. Do not skip doses of the antibiotics, do not stop taking antibiotics prematurely, because you feel better. When treatment is over, do not keep antibiotics left at home for future need. Donate somewhere where it is needed. If you spend 3 days of starting antibiotic treatment and you see no improvement, your doctor must see you again. Do not recommend to others the antibiotics prescribed by your doctor.Eat yogurt daly that helps to restore intestinal flora that is burdened by antibiotics
