Introduction: Surface, Deep, and Dark Web

This post is for people to understand the difference between web types. I'm sure most of you have heard about the terms 'deep web' and 'dark web' but still don't know what are they. I will list a brief explanation below that will help everyone distinguish the difference between the 3 types.

Surface Web:

This type is what all people use to surf the net. So by using search engines like Google, Yahoo, and others, what you are doing exactly is that you are surfing a small portion of the total web called 'Surface Web' although you are getting lots of information which makes you think you got everything online. The big surprise is that the surface web consists only of 4% of the total web content.

Deep Web

This type is the hidden or invisible part of the web that cannot be reached by search engines' crawlers. Simply saying, this type consists of password-protected web pages such as library databases, bank accounts, etc that are not reachable unless the user has the access key to these links. And this part has the largest portion of the web which consists of 96% of the internet. But this is only one category of the deep web information. However, we will investigate the other category independently under the 'Dark Web' section.

Dark Web

Since it is under the category of the deep web, this makes also unreachable through ordinary methods (search engines). The difference, however, is that dark web is for illegal purposes - buying and selling drugs, weapons, and other illegal items or acts that require keeping away from governments' eyes. And people involved in these activities mostly use special software such as Tor in order to get access to such stuff and actions.

Wow ... I haven't known that...

Simply saying, this type consists of password-protected web pages such as library databases, bank accounts, etc that are not reachable unless the user has the access key to these links. And this part has the largest portion of the web which consists of 96% of the internet

Which makes "open source" kind of irrelevant? Or I should say that my perception of what is free in the net shifted now and that most things are not free, as I already had assumed :)
