One of the potential Cinderella teams in March Madness may not even get a shot as they may not make the NCAA Tournament. The Vermont Catamounts lost in their conference championship game today by a score of 65-62 to UMBC. They must now sit and pray for an at large bid from the NCAA Selection Committee and that may be a pipe dream.
Vermont has only lost one conference game in the last two years. That is the highest conference winning % of any team in the country. They are built perfectly for the NCAA Tournament with 5 senior starters. But it is doubtful that they will get the opportunity. It is almost impossible for a conference like the American East to get two teams in to the big dance. At large bids almost always go to the Power 5 Conference teams.
Looking at the stats of today’s loss to UMBC, you would think that Vermont had come out on top. They shot a higher percentage from the field, the free throw line, and the 3 point line. Vermont dominated on the boards as well. But one key area was turnovers. Vermont had 13 costly turnovers to UMBC’s 4. They simply could not protect the ball and that cost them the game and may have cost them the season. We will have to wait until tomorrow night to see if their name gets called during the Selection Show. But one thing is for certain, the UMNC Retrievers will hear their name called, congrats on a big win!
