The Worst Picks of the 2018 NBA Draft

The NBA Draft is ultimately a crapshoot. It's not always a guarantee that you'll get the absolute best prospect even if you're picking in one of the top slots. Andrew Wiggins in 2014 over Joel Embiid at #3? Fourteen NBA teams passed on Giannis Antetokuompo in 2013? Derrick Williams over Kawhi Leonard? Jahlil Okafor over Kristaps Porzingis? The Wolves picked Johnny Flynn and Ricky Rubio over Steph Curry? Certain players surprise us in both good and bad ways when adapting to the ever-changing league. So who knows how these guys will turn out. Despite that, here are a couple picks that didn't sit right with me.
Hawks Trade Away Luka Doncic at #3 to take Trae Young at #5
On Thursday evening, NBA commissioner Adam Silver strutted across the stage of the Barclays Center to announce Luka Doncic as the #3 overall pick to the Atlanta Hawks. Some time went by, and we learned that the rights to Doncic were traded to the Mavericks for the rights to Trae Young at the #5 slot. Trae Young has a chance to become good in this guard and shooting centric league, but I think Doncic shows promise to be a superior leader, competitor, and a superstar. He led his squad to victory in the Euroleague championship, winning the Final Four MVP award along the way at the ripe age of 19.
Trae Young can still be a great piece for the Hawks, but I think Doncic has the higher ceiling. Young has drawn comparisons to Steph Curry with his slight frame and shooting ability. He can develop into something over time, but I think he's going to get eaten up his first 2 or 3 years before he puts on some real strength. Part of why Steph curry is so speedy and successful is because he has the core strength of Zeus. It enables him to shift around while ballhandling and pull up with speed. Trae Young should definitely take the Steph curry approach if he isn't already, he'll need all the strength he can muster in the NBA.

Kings Take Marvin Bagley III at #2
Marvin Bagley III is an all-around great athlete and prospect with some glaring question marks on the defensive end of the floor. He'll need to put on a lot more muscle too. But the thing is, the Kings are already stacked in their frontcourt. I don't know how much time he'll get and how many meaningful situations they'll be able to put him in. His defensive shortcomings this year were a big reason the Duke Blue Devils had to adopt a zone defense. There's going to be a steep learning curve this year, but if Zach Randolph can take Bagley under his wing he'll show some promise.

Clippers Take Jerome Robinson at #13
If I were the Clippers, I would've taken the risk on Michael Porter Jr. He ended up getting scooped up by the Denver Nuggets on the very next pick. They dealt with a chronically injured Blake Griffin for most of his career though, maybe they were taking a conservative approach in terms of health.
Robinson's draft stock was on the upswing leading up to the draft, and the Clippers bought in. He played for Boston College up to his junior year and didn't exactly see the cream of the crop of college competition. He's older so he'll be able to bring a more mature presence to the Clippers compared to a one-and-done, but the upside of Michael Porter Jr (he needs work though) just seemed too nice to pass up.

Denver got a steal!

Think so too. If he pans out he's got a ton of tools to be good

Agreed! Besides, this could help them tank again and get another top draft pick like what phili did!

exactly. You either got to go up or down haha. Can't be caught in the middle

👌

I think that next NBA season will take us a lot of surprises, because I think that a lot of team had bad choices: in my opinion Young will not be able to become the new-Curry, because he is not fisically ready. I have some doubts also on the first pick, but in this case he could be art of a great duo in Phoenix with Booker.
I am ready for the beginning of the season.

Yea he has a chance to be a good shooter and player! I just would've put my money on doncic

I totally agree with you on the Clippers - you're located in Los Angeles, you've got a team that is either a) on its way out and headed for a major rebuild or b) still trying to stay relevant and are a couple of pieces away from being able to contend in the West again, you need to appease that market and you take Jerome Robinson? I know Porter obviously is a big injury risk as you pointed-out, but like you said at the # 13 spot to get a guy who could have potentially been the # 1 pick last year is just something you can't pass up. Good article man - enjoyed the read!

Thanks for reading my dude! Actually with that austin rivers trade SGA should grab up some of the minutes he left behind. Maybe that was their plan all along with drafting him. We will see in due time if Michael Porter Jr. ends up haunting them though

Agree. The clippers should've take the risk of drafting Michael Porter. But remember that the 13th pick has a curse. Devin Booker, Donovan Mitchell, etc. Haha

Shit I didn't realize both those guys were drafted at 13!
