The 2018 Rose Bowl between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Georgia Bulldogs is one of the best college football games that I have ever seen. Georgia won 54-48 in a double overtime thriller that had the fans on the edge of their seats for almost 4 hours. The Oklahoma Sooners Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Baker Mayfield, has taken his last snap while the Georgia Bulldogs move on to face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game on Monday night.
The game got off to an explosive start as Mayfield threw a touchdown in the first 4 minutes of the game. Georgia would respond with a Jake Fromm pass to star running back Sony Michel a few minutes later. It was clear really fast that this game was going to be a shootout. Oklahoma running back Rodney Anderson would rush for two touchdowns next to help the Sooners take a 21-7 lead.

The second quarter would finish with a slurry of scoring including a 55 yard field goal that never should have happened. The Sooners were up 31-17 after CeeDee Lamb, on a trick play, threw a touchdown pass to quarterback Baker Mayfield with 6 seconds left in the half. But after the score, instead of just kicking the ball off deep, the Sooners tried a squib kick that was immediately caught near the 50 yard line. That gave enough time for one quick play and then the long field goal attempt that Rodrigo Blankenship nailed allowing the Bulldogs to pull with in 31-17 at the half.
That gave Georgia the momentum they needed as they started the second half by running the ball down the throat of the Oklahoma defense. Nick Chubb and Sony Michel would each rush for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, which tied up the game at 31-31 heading into the final quarter.
The 4th quarter was extremely exciting as there were 4 touchdowns scored. Oklahoma was enjoying a 45-38 lead as Georgia got the ball back with a few minutes left in the game. Their freshman quarterback, Jake Fromm, showed lots of poise and led them down the field for Nick Chubb to run the ball in with under a minute left to tie the game.

The game was headed to overtime. Georgia started with the ball first and were unable to get into the end zone so they settled for a 38 yard field goal. They had a 3 point lead and all the Oklahoma Sooners needed to do to win the game and head to the National Championship would be to score a touchdown. But in some of the worst coaching that has ever been done, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley, doesn’t even call 1 passing play. Baker Mayfield was the Heisman Trophy winning QB and with a chance at being in the final game next week, they simply handed the ball off. Even worse, on 3rd and 2 yards to go, the Sooners ran the ball with Jordan Smallwood. Who the hell is that you ask? A player that has only carried the ball THREE TIMES on the season. If you are going to run the ball, at least give it to your star Rodney Anderson who had 26 carries for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day! Or even better, let your QB, Baker Mayfield, rise to the occasion and make a play.
Oklahoma would kick a field goal and force a second OT. But they would not be able to get into the end zone again and when the Sooners lined up for a 27 yard filed goal, it was blocked by Austin Seibert. Georgia got the ball and on the second play of the series, running back Sony Michel would run for a 27 yard touchdown and advance the Bulldogs to the National Championship game. Michel ran for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns on the night and Nick Chubb also had 145 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Congrats to the Georgia Bulldogs and I can’t wait to see them take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday night. Thank you for following @steemsports and you can find me @scottybuckets.
