Tennessee vs Georgia Tech Recap!
SteemSports Presenter: Scott Frank,@scottybuckets
What a glorious end to a fantastic opening weekend in college football! The Tennessee Vols and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets put on one hell of a show on Monday night. Here is what happened.
The first half was dominated by Georgia Tech and their impressive running game. Although the Tennessee Vols defense had been practicing for the Yellow Jackets triple option all summer and preseason, they just couldn't contain them. GT ran over twice as many plays in the first half and had the Vols defense on the field the majority of the first half.
First year starting quarterback TaQuon Marshall only completed 2 of 4 passes in the first half. But Marshall ran the ball 22 times for 75 yards and a touchdown. GT also saw success in the running game from KirVonte Benson who ran 11 times for 63 yards and a touchdown as they took a 14-7 halftime lead.
The Tennessee Vols struggled mightily on offense in the the first half. New starting quarterback Quinten Dormady suffered from 5 dropped balls including some crucial throws. He was only 8-20 for 47 yards but several of those should have been catches and more points on the board. Running back John Kelly had 7 rushes for 35 yards and a touchdown and would have been a much bigger factor if the wide receivers would have held onto the ball.
Georgia Tech received the second half kickoff and ran the ball down the throat of the Vols defense. They took over 5 minutes off the clock before scoring. GT quarterback, Marshall, got in the endzone with a one yard run to take the 21-7 lead. After Tennessee failed again to move the ball, GT marched down the field but the possession ended with a missed field goal.
That gave the Vols some life. A few plays later, running back John Kelly got loose for 30 yards and got them down to first and goal. Quarterback Dormandy then threw a beautiful pass to the back right corner of the endzone. The Vols cut the score to 21-14 as the 3rd quarter came to an end.
The 4th quarter started with GT having Marshall throw a 42 yard bomb to get them to the 5 yard line. Two plays later, Marshall runs it in for a touchdown. GT took the 28-14 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.
That score didn't last long as Dormady hit Callaway for a 50 yard touchdown pass to once again pull within a touchdown at 28-21. Over the next several minutes, not much happened. But the Vols got the ball back and drove down the field. Then, with 1:21 left on the clock, John Kelly ran for a touchdown and tied the game at 28 and forced the game into overtime.
Georgia Tech got the ball first and ran in for another rushing touchdown. Then the Vols scored back to back touchdowns with John Kelly runs. It all came down to the next possession for GT. After a brilliant run by Marshall, they elected to go for 2 points and were stopped at the goal line, losing 42-41 in an epic battle.
What a dynamite weekend and game. Thanks for following @steemsports and you can catch me @scottybuckeys Cheers!
