By record, the worst team in the MLB, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Atlanta Braves in extra innings, by a final score of 9-7. With the victory under their belt, Cincinnati is one won shy of winning their first series of the season, and they are two games short of earning their first sweep of the season. Not that it is of essence this early in the season, but the two defeats the Braves were dealt dropped them from a wildcard position. These two teams will take the field in game 3 at 5:40 this evening, in Great American Field.

By the time the game rolled in to the 6th inning, the Reds seemed to have the game locked up, having 5 runs on the scoreboard to the Braves 0. The first three runs all came on the ground, in the second inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Gennet and Joey Votto hit back-to-back homers, giving the crowd a rare occurrence of assurance. Votto’s homer put the first, of many more to come, on his stat sheet. Not only was it Votto’s first homerun, but Gennet’s too.

Freddie Freeman and Kurt Suzuki cut the deficit to two runs in the top of the 7th inning. Freeman drove in the first homerun, a solo shot to deep right center. Subsequent to Freeman’s homer, Markakis cracked a double. Finally, Kurt Suzuki brought Markakis and himself across the plate with a 2 run blast to left field. Cincinatti scored two of their own in the bottom of the same inning, spanning their lead to 4.

Leading into the ninth, the Braves had three options; the first option was falling to the Reds, the second option was tying the game, and looking forward to extra innings, and the third and final option was to defeat the Reds in the ninth. Atlanta took upon the second option, as Freddie Freeman blasted his second homer of the game to start the momentum driven run. Camagaro then skipped to the bag while the bases were loaded, bringing in Suzuki. Inciarte tied the game on an infield RBI single.

Between the bottom of the ninth through the top of the 12th, action was purely astray. Max Fried walked Joey Votto, and Gennet drove him in with his second homer of the evening, and of the season. This was Gennet’s first multi-hr game in quite some time, and rightfully so, Gennet earned the player of the game award. What’s more, sophomore pitcher, Tyler Mahle, struck out 11 batters through 6 innings, which should of been deserving of a victory, but his bullpen teammates failed him.
