The 2018 NFL Draft is almost here and we want to take a look at some of the best players that will be hearing their names called in the first rounds. Today we want to focus on the Tight End position. First, let’s take a look at Hayden Hurst. He is a junior at the University of South Carolina and is entering the draft a year early.
The 6’5 and 250 pound Hurst is the top TE on the draft board. He is from Jacksonville, Florida and took a strange route to get to where he is at today. Hurst was a phenomenal athlete in high school but football was not his first sport to reach professional success in. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 2012 when he was just out of high school. But he was unable to make the majors and after playing in the minor leagues for two years, he decided to hang up his baseball cleats and put on his football ones.
Hurst would pick the University of South Carolina to go to and he would walk on to the football team as a freshman. He would be given a chance to play right off the bat and appeared in every game of the season. His sophomore year would be even better and he caught at least one pass in all 13 games. That would be good enough for Hurst to finally earn a scholarship.
The junior year for Hurst would be his best ever. He caught 44 passes for 559 yards. He would be named to the all conference SEC team. Hurst never missed a game in his three year college football career. He quickly gained attention from NFL scouts and agents and was encouraged to take the leap to the NFL. His size, speed, and agility will be a great fit in the NFL and whoever drafts him will be getting a welcome addition.
