The NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell reached a new contract extension today. The contract will pay Goodell up to $200 Million over the next 5 years. This has been a hot topic for several weeks as the NFL is in the middle of its worst ratings in decades and Goodell is getting part of the blame for that.

Although the NFL is a professional sports league that sells out 60,000+ stadiums every Sunday, it is ran much like a marketing company. The tickets sales are important for every franchise and they want their seats full so they can sell beer, hot dogs, and merchandise. But a huge bulk of this BILLION dollar industry comes from their advertising dollars. With the NFL Redzone and Direct TV’s NFL Package, it has become more and more convenient for fans to stay home and watch the games from the comfort of their own couch. To take a family of 4 or even have a group of 4 buddies go to a game, pay for parking to tailgate, and get decent seats can run into the thousands.
Attending the Super Bowl has been completely priced out by large corporations with deep pockets getting the tickets. So 99.9999999% of the fan base is watching the game on television. And that means lots of viewers of COMMERCIALS. Super Bowl ads can go for as much as $3 Million for :30 seconds. Regular season commercials here in the Chicagoland area go for around $1,000 depending on the ratings and the season. And this year the ratings are garbage.

Colin Kaepernick started this ratings mess last year with his kneeling nonsense. This did not go over good with the average NFL fan that is a blue collar, beer drinking, hard worker that looks for Sundays in the NFL as an escape to their daily stress in life. The last thing they want to see is players getting political and disrespecting our military and flag. But when Roger Goodell had the chance to stop this, he did nothing and let it grow out of control. Not only are stadiums half full this year, but television ratings are in the tank. And the national anthem protests are the reason why. This is a massive deal as the less people watching = less people seeing the expensive advertisements. All the good and growth that Roger Goodell has brought to the league, the players, and the owners, is being close to washed away. That is why todays extension was kind of surprising. Rewarding a man that has completely failed at his leadership role doesn’t seem to make sense.
Dallas Cowboys outspoken owner, Jerry Jones, was trying to lead the rally against extending Goodell. But Jones failed in his hopes and Goodell will continue to call the shots for at least the next 5 years. What do you think of how Goodell has handled this season? We would love to hear your comments.

Too many people have tuned this out this year.

agreed. I have several friends that will watch College Football but not NFL anymore.

I believe Goodell though hated, is a hell of a commish.

He has done a fantastic job growing the value of the business. There is no doubt about that. But he has blundered the suspension issues with domestic violence and now the kneeling crap for sure.
