How the Cavaliers Traded Kryie for Nothing

Kyrie Irving demanded a trade last off season that shocked the basketball world. It was unexpected and just came out of nowhere. Nobody knew that he was unhappy with Cleveland and he did not want to be just the number two option behind LeBron James. He wanted to make a name for himself and wanted to lead his own team. What Kyrie brings to this team is priceless. He knocked down the game winning shot in their first championship. He’s an incredible scorer who can beat anyone off the dribble and a strong finisher who can pass by opponents relentlessly. He was a superstar point guard and arguably has the best handles in the history of the NBA. The Cavaliers granted Kyrie’s demand and he was traded to the Boston Celtics.

The Cavaliers got all-star guard Isaiah Thomas, 3 & D forward Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the 2018 Brooklyn nets pick. At the time of the trade, it was graded equal or okay because the Cavs got an all-star guard in return plus a valuable draft pick which is projected top 3. But after the result of the draft lottery, looks like Celtics GM Danny Ainge committed another robbery after the Nets pick falls at number 8. Isaiah Thomas was out for a long time due to his hip injury and he only manage to play a handful of games. And when he returned, he’s not the same IT who finished top 5 MVP candidate last season. On the other hand, Jae Crowder seemed to be a great role player under Brad Stevens system only. He did not fit with the Cavs and he seems to lose his shooting ability from the three-point territory.

To fix all the problems, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ association decided to trade both Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder to the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz, landing key role players in return. The Cavaliers acquired George Hill, Rodney Hood, Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. For the Lakers, it was a great move because they’re desperately cleaning some cap space to get ready for the off season, and trading away Jordan Clarkson’s huge contract can create a lot of cap space for them. George Hill is a great addition because he’s a veteran guard who knows how to play in the playoffs and can shoot threes consistently but not enough to fill the void Kyrie left. Rodney Hood is a young 6 foot 7 guard that has potential to grow and be a solid scorer. Larry Nance Jr. is an athletic big man that can grab the boards but lacks in offense and not that great defensively. To summarize this, all in all, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded away Kyrie Irving for a bunch of role players and some of them has huge contract like Clarkson and Hill, plus the number 8 draft pick which is far behind their expected top 3 pick. The Cavaliers should’ve not rushed in trading Irving. They maybe got more valuable assets in exchange for Irving. The Bledsoe or Middleton trade maybe makes more sense. I’m not saying that’s the right choice, but it may be better that way or it may be different with that. So the most valuable asset that the Cavaliers got in exchange for Irving is only the number 8 pick in the upcoming draft. This summer will be challenging for them and people will surely wait if the Irving trade is truly worth it.
