Spanish side, Atletico Madrid cruised to a 3 – 0 victory against French side, Marseille in Lyon last night in the final of the UEFA’s second tier European competition, the UEFA Europa League.
The convincing victory for Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid team would be their third crown in the competition during the last nine seasons.
French forward, Antoine Griezmann was the star of the night; as his double on the night, ensured that Atletico Madrid would end the season with another European trophy, while Marseille would rue their missed opportunity for European glory.

Line Up:
Marseille: Mandanda, Sarr, Rami, Gustavo, Amavi, Zambo, Sanson, Thauvin, Payet, Ocampos, Germain.
Atletico Madrid: Oblak, Vrsaljko, Gimenez, Godin, Lucas, Correa, Gabi, Saul, Koke, Griezmann, Costa.
Referee: Bjorn Kuipers (Netherlands)
Venue: Groupama Stadium, Lyon
Attendance: 55768
Scoreline: Marseille 0 – 3 Atletico Madrid
Antoine Griezmann fired Atletico Madrid into the lead after 21 minutes with a coolly slotted finish, following a poor touch by Marseille’s Zambo Anguissa.

The second goal from Atletico and Griezmann came just 4 minutes into the second half, and it was a lovely dink over Marseille’s goalie, Steve Mandanda, who couldn’t help his team against a very sturdy Atletico Madrid side.

Despite Marseille’s earlier thrust forward and clear cut opportunities early in the game, they couldn’t come back in to the game, and things got even worse for them.
Atletico Madrid captain, Gabi struck a beautiful third goal for Atletico to ensure that the Spanish side would claim the Europa League trophy which they had previously won in 2010 and 2012.
Another sad incident was the case of Marseille star man and skipper, Dimitri Payet, who could possibly be missing out on the Russia 2018 world cup, if his reactions and suspected aggravated injury which ended his game prematurely, is of any indication.

Without Dimitri Payet, who has been mercurial for the French side, since leaving West Ham United last summer, Marseille struggled to cope after he left the pitch in tears having had just a little over 30 minutes of play on the night.
Chances by former Fulham forward and Marseille striker, Kosta Mitroglou went begging, and one particular opportunity was headed against the post.

There was massive jubilation for the Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid side, at the end of the whistle; as the team trouped on to the pitch to celebrate their third Europa league crown in nine seasons.
Marseille’s stars and supporters were left in tears and huge disappointment, as their chance to write their names in the history books faded right before their eyes.
