If I had to choose between the two, I would totally agree with you. When going to Steemspeak the following line shows somewhere: ''It's time to ditch Skype and TeamSpeak.'' Like you said, your logo resembles much more about how people are speaking through one of the three platforms. The microphone on the current looks more like a radio-DJ's or someone reading the school announcements or something. That's how I look at it anyways.
By the way, I like the current logo so for me it's both alright. But I understand your point.
