Fun with flags and coins.....

Throughout the month of April, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts. With my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

It was on the 12th of April, more than 400 years ago, that the modern flag of the United Kingdom was first hoisted, thereby launching everyone's favourite pub debate: is it the Union Jack or the Union flag?

Whatever it may be called, the flag combines elements representing England, Scotland and Ireland, a fact that sparks even more debate if like me you come from Wales.

An iconic piece of Britain, the iconic Union Flag, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. Symbolising the union of countries which make up the United Kingdom, the flag combines the three national flags. The red cross of St George, the white saltire on St Andrew and the red saltire of St Patrick, to create the iconic Union Flag we see today.

Nowadays, you can spot the flag reigning high in many places, including at Buckingham Palace when the Queen is not in residence.

Since their first release in 2018, mintage figures for each of the 26 alphabet coins has been released, and the prices of these coins have continued to increase on the secondary market. The 2019 version of these coins had a lower mintage figure and the price of these are slightly higher than their 2018 counterparts.
