1878 Morgan Dollar....the 2oz varietysteemCreated with Sketch.

This 1878 Morgan Dollar Copy made it's way into my collection at some point. Another coin that really doesn't interest me. It does have some nice toning starting on the front and sides. It has a numbered edge showing 0594. No clue who made this or where it came from. Similar coins on eBay and Apmex don't have much info either. Here is what I'm working with.

Do you have any info on this coin?

Not sure why it would have a serial number. Let me know if you know anything about it. Thanks

That's interesting that rather than changing the design to remove the details that would make it a dollar (like where it says One Dollar), they added "Copy" to the design. Is it authentic? Have you been able to test it?

I haven't had it tested, but it does weigh 2 Troy Oz. I do see a good number of them floating around on reputable sites for sale. Still having a hard time figuring out who originally made it.

Isn't it strange that even with all the resources and information that we have at our fingertips, we still can't figure out what some of these rounds are? Maybe the information just wasn't available, or maybe someone made them and didn't take credit for it. Who knows? It does make for a good hunt though!

Thanks for your support @ssg-community!

I remember these being sold. Can’t remember if it was the Danbury Mint or another off Mint that made them. They were heavily advertised in magazines in the 80’s.

Nice. That gives me a little direction. Not sure why they wouldn't put the mint name on it somewhere. Let me see what I can dig up. Thanks @silverd510.

I forgot who minted that. It is a replica of the first year issue of the George T Morgan Dollar, that is why it is stamped "copy". It is a 2 oz silver round, although denominated, it is a round, not legal tender. Hard to find those.
