Flea-market throw aways Resin Filled Antique Cutlery to Silver Scrap - €5 cost to $40 in scrap Silver
I tend to find a lot of these handles - def a lot more than spoons and forks which are sold by weight for scrap before most get a chance to see them.
Most people don't want to mess with these resin filled handles because of the low silver content and difficulty of seperating the base metals/resin from the silver. BUT, its not really quite simple - see all it takes is some hot coals and about 5 minutes. Ahh, and some resin smells so good burnt! Sometimes they even used amber(in EU)..
Final weights after seperation and resin removal:
98 grams or a little over 3oz - 900 purity silver or 90% 88 grams(+/-3 oz) pure silver X $16.41 oz 999 silver price today = $49.30 after scrap man takes a 20% cut $40 - or just melt into own pour
Here are some pics:
Maybe next time you see them at the markets you will think to purchase them instead of so many that just walk over them because its 'hard work'
That is awesome. Great idea. I have never really hunted for silver like that. Thanks for giving me new idea!
Some of the best resin smells too - you can use this for freshening up the house
