👀Eye Candy👀 US Mint - Follow UP!
I am going to be publishing subtle posts that brings pleasure to the 👀👀EYES👀👀.
Also know as 👀EYE CANDY👀
The photos in the posts will include all of my interests and hobbies. Which are silver ingots, physical crypto currency coins, cars, knives, and bank notes. Now let's go!
☝️Here is the photo I posted a couple weeks ago for an Eye Candy post. I said I would make a follow up post giving some more information! It is a unique example that has some incredible history associated. Here is the follow up..
An interesting variable with this ingot is the capitol plastic holder it is in. It is labeled US Mint Silver on top and Assay Bar on bottom. I am 99% sure this holder was manufactured post production and purchased by an early owner. The Assay Bar term on the bottom is not it official production name. Its more of a slang term used by collectors. None the less, the plastic holder is VERY old. Most the pins have been knocked out. The ingot has been in the holder for decades. As the ingot itself shows significant toning where the sides meet the plastic insert.
☝️ The eagle with in the hallmark is well struck. Some of the wording on the left side is missing. This 5oz class US Mint of San Francisco silver ingot demonstrates a type 1 hallmark with curved stem 9s in the purity. This variation is the last production ingot of the early type 1 hallmark manufactured by the US Mint. It is believed that production dates back to the 1940s.
The reverse side demonstrates the strong toning that is a result of sitting in the plastic holder many years! You will also notice faded writting on the top. That is the weight designation. During production they would write the weight in black marker prior to stamping it. This was an attempt to accurately stamp the true weight of each ingot. A VERY small percentage of US Mint ingots still have the original black marker on them. You have to figure. After 80 yrs of getting passed around. At some point, someone would have cleaned the bar or it just wore off due to frequent handling.
This is where silver, history, and art come together. The originality of this piece makes it highly collectible! Over the past year we have seen auction and private sales ranging from $2700.00 - $5000.00. Keep your eyes out!
