AAO Study..

My most recent post was a mailcall pertaining to an Arizona Assay Office ingot. I had some time over the past 24hrs to compare and contrast it with other AAO ingots. The study did reveal a few interesting observations.

I started off by laying out a group of AAO ingots. Starting off with the smallest weight on the bottom. Working my way up in weight and setting them above each other.

I have found this the most effective way to compare and contrast similar silver ingots. You need to be able to size them up against eachother. This exposes even the most subtle differences.

We knew the 3oz-5oz weight class share the same mold. The heavier the bar the "thicker" it is. The shape and size left to right and top to bottom is the same demensions. AFTER laying them out I noticed there was a substantial difference between the 5oz class mold size!

☝️Interesting point here is the smaller mold is actually the heavier bar at 4.92oz. The larger mold at the top is a 4.89oz. Clearly demonstrating there was two different size molds used to manufacturer the 5oz weight class.

The ONLY other difference between the two 5oz molds is that the larger mold has a stand alone 's' before the purity stamp. We have see that 's' on several examples. Could this be a mark used to indicate a mold change or certain period of production ? It certainly makes you think!

At this point I am going to start comparing all the known 's' designated ingots to see if I can find any common factors between them. This is where all the fun is behind collecting. Connecting the dots and filling in the gaps!!

I hope to have a follow up article to this with some more developments. Cheers!
