# 191 - Korea

Continuing the Modern Commemoratives Dollar series, we will present you today the 1991 "Korea" graded by PCGS PR70 DCAM.

All coins of this series weight 26.73g with 90% silver purity. They were issued in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finish.

They will be presented in the order they were minted.

The 1991 "Korean War Memorial Silver Dollar" was issued to mark the 38th anniversary of the Korean War and to honor those who served. The oddly chosen anniversary date is the result of the division between North and South Korea at the 38th degree of latitude. Can you believe it?

The obverse of the coin depicts a soldier charging up a hill with naval ships in the foreground and two aircraft flying above.

On the reverse of the coin is a map of Korea with the division at the 38th parallel and the “yin and yang” in the south. An eagle’s head appears to the left of the map.

A total of 618,488 coins were minted in Philadelphia. The issue price was U$31.00. The actual price is around U$350.00 in this grade.

    It is really very strange to commemorate the 38th anniversary of a war because of parallel 38th, but the coin is beautiful.

    The Modern American Commemoratives series is known for, contrary to the Old Commemoratives, commemorating real national events/people. This was an exception, not about the event but for the date.

      Yes, in 1994 they minted the "Vietnam Veterans Memorial" commemorative. It will be shown in a few weeks, in this series.
